Good luck. I wonder what happened to it and all the others he modded. Man, it would be so cool to find some of these!

Here's a slightly blown-up vwersion of that same pic

I thought I had a giant one of these (the whole rig) but couldn't find it. So I started Googlin'

Cipollina was always one of my favorites but he's one of those guys who gets overlooked a lot it seems.

Found these on a Myspace tribute page, live at the Whiskey

Am I hallucinating or is that guitar body bound?

I've always loved Cipollina. But that's not the original guitar he played with Quicksilver back in the Sixties. The original one is an SG/LP that he changed to a large-pickguard style that also has that Rick Griffin look to it. It also had Grover Imperials, what look to me to be metal knobs and other appointments. There are pictures of that guitar around, too. It's more subtle looking than this one, but still very cool.

He was years ahead, and I'd still buy one that looked liked those rather than anything new... (hint hint...)

Hunt up the early 70s GP with the Cipollina article that has several pictures of his SGs- some heavily modified. And the amp with the trumpet like horns, and the Condor device...

I liked the one on the first album... Standard inlays, modified pickguard.

The block/banjo inlays look a bit overdone to me. The first one looked very cool.

I've got that issue, I'll scan all the photos and put them up later.

Take a trip to Cleveland.....both of his SG's and his rig are in the R & R Hall of Fame.

Cippolina RULES....
One of the best guitar players ever!!!
Had a personal style and tone.
He played in stereo in late 60's using multi amp set up.
Very under rated and forgotten guitar player....wish he was still with us!!!!

right. also he had 2-one was not quite as fancy if i remember. i don't see how the "Batman" franchise missed out on a groovy tie-in with Gibson!

I attended the Cipollina tribute show that was held at the Fillmore shortly after his death. His multi-amp rig, including the brass horns, and SG were set up on the stage. There were various band configurations throughout the night that featured the people John had shared the stage with through the years. At the end of the show everyone played Pride of Man. Their playing was synched up with the original track from the album and John's original lead was used. It sounded like they actually fed his lead through his amps.

There are photos and a couple of videos out on the net that show the block/banjo inlays guitar at various stages in its life. There is a video that shows the guitar after the body had been bound and the block inlay fingerboard had been added, however, the banjo inlays had yet to be installed.

Sgt Joe...Thanks for putting that old GP about John Cippolina one of the greatest players I ever heard.I have the same issue.

Lets teach to the youngsters who is who on guitar.
Cippolina was under rated and forgotten by many of us.The good news is that his Music will never die.
Greetings :ganz
