• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Although the Ox never used the G3 on any Who recordings, I think he used it on tour and he is also seen posing with such bass in this photo.

This photo looks to be around 1976, since this was when Gibson introduced the G3, Ripper and Grabber basses to the public. Another controversial quality product from Norlin!
john did however play a Gibson Thunderbird bass, a Gibson EB-2 and a Gibson EB3, and he also owned a Les Paul.

I hope people don’t lose interest in this post.

I also believe he own some Gibson Ripper basses too, whilst I have no written proof in late 1975 into earlier 1976 I purchased an almost brand new Gibson Ripper bass from a small music store in Acton (close to where John originally came from) West London, the guy in the store told me he was selling on behalf of Entwistle (at the time it had no meaningful additional value) I paid £100 for it back then and sadly sold it by around 1980 although I still own its original hard case (it a shaped case so easier to handle than those large oblong ones) I’ve often wished I hadn’t sold it (as with many instruments over the years) and finally managed to buy one (a 1976/77 model) a few months ago here in the U.K. This is the original case and in great condition unlike the one that came with my recent purchase

Actually Gibson Ripper & Grabber were first introduced in 1973/74 and the G3 1975/76

He was a huge collector and owned lots of everything.

We don't know if he never recorded with one (though I doubt he did)

Yes I’m aware of John’s massive collection of guitars and basses
