Does anybody know when Gibson commenced using Kluson tuners with "Gibson Deluxe" rather than " Kluson Deluxe" (double line) stamped on the back of them.I'm refering to the original klusons with the patent number stamped on the under- side of the tuner.

Mel,
I don't know the answer to your question but I just had an interesting experience (at least to me) with these tuners.

In the old days, we automatically replaced those Klusons with Grovers, so since I decided I'm going to make my current LP Special a permanent member, I changed out the Gibson Deluxes for Grover Rotomatics. I never had any tuning trouble until I made that switch, so I checked them out and the Gibson Deluxes are 16:1 gear ratio and the Rotomatics are 14:1.

Quickly, the Deluxes were put back on even though I'm still getting used to the look of those plastic knobs. (BTW, I'm keeping the Fralin P-90s :dude)
I remembered the Klusons as being something like 8:1 gear ratio, what's up with that?

So to add to your question: Does anybody know if Gibson made a change to improve these tuners. They sure are a hell of a lot better than they used to be. Unless my memory is ... sorry lost my train of thought

Mel,

I was asking similar questions a few days ago, and I think it was brought up that Gibson is using Gotoh Kluson replicas, and they are not using Klusons.. I've got some Klusons coming in so I'll post my opinjions when I get them installed and such..

Newoldcokedave,
I'm actually refering to the original klusons which were manfactured in the 50s, 60s and early 70s.I don't think the new kluson style tuners have a patent number stamped beneath the tuner.

N.O.C.D., sorry about that.In my experience there are some occassions where-by a message may be misinterpreted. My initial intention was only to clarify the situation. My humble apologies.

OK, stupid question: Were Kluson tuners still nickel plated after the other hardware was changed to chrome in 1965? My '64 SG Standard has Gibson Deluxe tuners (patent no. stamped on the back), but they're definitely nickel, not chrome. I'm not saying they're the originals, because it seems to have had Grovers at some point, I just thought it was odd them being nickel if they're from the late '60s.
