Landgraff D.O. questions.

I am looking at this costly little pedal and before I jump in, I have a few questions.

I will use it wirh my R7 and R4 into a Carr Rambler.

-Is it more suited to an amp already breaking up or will it work with something with a lot of clean headroom? I play through a Rambler and it has tons of clean headroom. The amp gets some grind, but nothing over the top.

-Is it really THAT good or am the reviews I read from people who just spent almost $400 on a pedal and are not about to say it is not all that?

-It is similar enough to anything else to justify buying the "other pedal"? In other words, is there a $200 difference between it and anything else in the $200 range (Fulltone, Analog Man, Keeley...)

-Does anyone here have any sound samples of the pedal in action?

-Does anyone here use one and might be able to offer an honest opinion about it?

Thanks in advance for the help,

mr

Well it is a lot of dough--but if I had started earlier with the LDO (instead of buying several of those $200-$300 pedals that sound good but unlitmately not very special) I would have actually saved a lot of money! That being said, it may not be for everybody (what pedal is?), but I believe they have a great return policy (money back). Yes, the other pedals get the job done, but there is something pretty special going on inside that cool painted little box.

I have tried mine with: 50w Marshall Plexi RI, a 1964 Black Face Deluxe Reberb, my new stock Blues Jr., and lo and behold even my tiny 1 watt Marshall mini! Sounds really special to me with all, but can't offer any advice about your Carr amp. Oh yeah, that little 1 watt amp was turned into a real killer, I'm not kidding, I could almost gig with it using that LDO. Guitars used: P-90s--excellent harmonics; Strat single coils & tele pickups--a match made in heaven; Burstbuckers--still the hardest to dial in the sweet spot but the best results so far with any pedal (including Keeley TS-808, mod RAT, Keeley BD-2Phat and more).

About a clip: do a search here becuase at one time Dan (Bluesforstevie) had a clip where he said the Landgraff made him a "rock star."

edit: Don't buy it, it's just a OD and there are many out there! (I'm saying this because I want to buy another one and they are few being made and not always easy to get, so don't buy one!)

I bought one last fall and really I'm very glad I did. It's simply the best sounding one on the market for a T.S. type OD. the other great one is the Fulltone OCD. I have both on my board and love the fact that I can go from squeak, jangley clean on my AC-30's to all out overdrive nirvana. I'm using an R-0 and an R-7 Custom! You won't be sorry you bought it!!

Thanks for the input guys.

I think I am going to give one a try (Sorry Sinner... :bh ) and if it is not for me, I know the used market will be no problem.

I was weighing it against the OCD, but hear a lot of people complain that it adds too much bass. I like the Keeley modified BD2, but just want only one OD so I am constantly trying this or that and keeping whichever works best for me. So far the Keeley is a keeper.

So, I will order, wait, and give it a shot.

I tried the clips on the "Rock Star" thread, but they are not active any longer.

If anyone knows of any clips I might hear, I would appreciate the links.

Hey Mike,
I've been using the Landgraff for a few years now as my primary overdrive. Unfortunately I haven't been able to be as active in the Jam Zone as I once was, but if you do a search in the Zone on my username, you'll find a number of clips I did and most all of them were using the Landgraff. I think the last one I did was the "Rough Boy" jam. Here's a link to that clip. It is my LP Custom w/ Timbuckers into the Landgraff and my '63 Bassman.

I bought mine on the pure hype you read on this and other forums. I got mine last week and could not be happier. What impresses me the most is it maintains the harmonics and the richness of your guitar's natural sound while giving you good distortion/overdrive.

To me, other overdrive/distortion pedals always seemed to cut the dynamic range of my guitar, like a blanket over the speakers, but this pedal doesn't seem to do that. Is it worth the money? Well, for me, to end the trade off between getting sustain and thickness on the one hand, at the expense of the dynamic range on the other, is worth every penny.

Just thought I'd weigh in here. The D.O. is a great pedal. It is a modified tube screamer with switchable gain types. Check out General Guitar Gadgets and you can get basically the same pedal for a more reasonable price. The site used to say that it was basically the same pedal, but I suspect legal reasons forced the maker to change his description:

I've built this same pedal and it sounds great. So much so that I put 2 of them in the same enclosure so I can have 1 set as classic TS sound and another set for more of a Marshally tone. It's an amazing setup.

Can you tell me how this pedal compairs to other pedals that you've tried?? What does the toggle switch do? And whatever else you can tell me...

I'd say that the pedal is basically the best tube screamer clone that I've heard. It has more gain and bass than a stock tube screamer. It is also true bypass so all of the input and output buffering is left out. I've tried the Keeley modded Rat, TS-9's (modded to 808 specs), and a Reverend Drivetrain (original black one). I liked the TS-9's the best out of those listed above, but was still looking for a more versatile pedal that didn't completely kill the bass frequencies. That is when I started reading the hype about the D.O. Being married with 2 kids more or less rules out a $400 pedal purchase. That is when I got into the D.I.Y. thing and started making boards and pedals. General Guitar Gadgets makes basically the same thing that I built for myself, and sells it for a very reasonable price considering it is completely hand wired.

The toggle switch changes between different types of clipping. There are 3 positions:

1. symetrical LEDs. This is closest to the standard TS sound, but uses LED (light emitting diodes) instead of regular diodes. This produces a smoother gain with more overall volume available than regular diodes. This is the position for Strat -> pedal -> Fender Amp = Stevie Ray Vaughan.

2. (middle position). There is nothing used to clip the signal. This will be close in volume to the symetrical LEDs and will distort quite a bit despite the lack of any diodes.

3. Asymetrical diodes. This is the Boss style of distortion. It will be lower in volume than the other 2 positions and will give more 2nd order harmonics to the distortion a la what is considered the Marshall sound.

I hope that helps.

I did not buy the actual parts from GGG, I got them from Mouser. I did use their tube screamer layout though and modded it to allow for the different diode switching, just like the Standard Overdrive.

GuitarG is the reason I bought the pedal. :dude It will not disappoint you, I promise.

Do a search in the Forum and look for my thread on the Landgraff - I give a decent review of the pedal and its capabilities.
