• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Let’s Talk ‘08 Standard

Nearly 11 years on now, do you remember this aberration? PC board, Neutrik jack, “Assemtrical neck”’ Plek’d (whatever happened to that snake oil?) and other delights. Well, it remains my only Standard. For no other reason than I just have spent time and money on other interests. It’s by far my only ‘burst-like’ top and is actually not bad for what it is. I know Elliot Easton liked his. I don’t feel mine sounds as good as my Tradional GT and certainly not my Custom with ‘57 Classics in it but...

Did you ever have one?
Like it
Keep it?
Good riddance?

I rather like my 2009 '08 Standard as well. Nothing changed, everything original.

I put an ABR tune-o-matic on mine, that’s about it. They’re a tad shiny for me. I’ll keep ‘er I suppose. Probably AA tops on both yours and mine. Gotta like that.

I believe the new Standards still have that neck on them, plus a bunch of other "innovations" (push-pull pots for wiring changes, etc.).

I have a '08 standard GoldTop , Put the JB at the Bridge and Jazz at the neck. I love it. sounds great. I also have a '10 Trad Pro with the 60's neck , I can never decide on what neck I like more. Want to get one with a bigger profile as well to compare all. I cant just play in store to see if I like or not .. need some time with them.. Its odd as I have large hands and long fingers so guess you may figure I would like a baseball bat...gigging my Standard is still my main.

Had the same Trad Pro and neck. Sold it and SERIOUSLY regret it! Loved that neck compared to the ‘traditional ‘ LP neck.

Oddly enough you would think the Trad Pro would be warmer as its over a pound heavier than my standard, same pickups in both guitars and I set them most... the Standard is much warmer,

The Trad pro is much brighter and crisper sounding

I probably wouldn’t have said mine is warm. I’ve never recorded (home) with the Standard. I did with the Trad and really liked the sound. The Standard is kind of a ‘Garage Queen’ in the car vernacular. I take it out, play some blues, shine it and put it away. Never gigged it either. Always took the Trad Pro GT or Custom. Don’t know why the Custom isn’t the darling, prolly that partial refin and PuP change. : /

I guess I started this thread hoping someone would chime in and say, “dude, these guitars are effing awesome!” Fat chance, huh! If it weren’t a little flamey I’d probably lump it in a pile to trade up to a Historic or VOS unit. It’s certainly not the tone keeping me in love, for sure.

I just got mine recently After years of 50’s neck profile Epiphone les Pauls, wide fat neck prs se and c shape strat necks I find the asymmetric shape really comfortable. the weight relief….. believe it or not I have a swamp ash Ibanez rg that is heavier by a couple oz. The tone from the chambered body is clear with a nice mid tone, perfect for the bluesy music I play. I‘ll have to say the unique features work well for me.. the other guitar player in my band has a 60’s standard and the slight tone difference Is a plus
