You know, I love anything Clapton as do others, and have one of the 2005 Clapton ES-335s and one of the 2011 Clapton signed/aged "Beano's" and a 1995 Clapton Strat with the lace sensor pickups and a Martin 000- 28-EC model and play them all, but I don't have a burning desire to own one of these Les Paul Customs (yet). Maybe it's because I have a vintage 1958 Les Paul Custom (photo below) and it's honestly not my favorite instrument to play. The three pickups get in the way of picking, and I don't enjoy the out-of-phase middle and bridge pickup sound when the selector switch is in the middle position. So this would just be a guitar to own because of Eric. But I know that others feel differently, and suspect that these will all be scooped up quickly. EDIT: Eating my own words -- stay tuned.....

Mike, I think you have the right idea, you have the two really definitive gibson guitars connected to clapton and the modern Laced out strat that has really been his sound since the 80s. thats all the EC you need

I had an original '59 Custom "back in the day" and really enjoyed it, the middle pickup didn't hinder me and it sounded really good through a 50-watt Marshall 1987 (I didn't bother with the middle setting, just the other two). I played it for 2 years and sold it to buy my 'burst but I do miss the Custom, love the look too. I'd buy the one at Willie's if I had a windfall (dreaming)😶‍🌫️

Cream was a little before my time and while i like some of his solo stuff I'm not a huge fan. Don't hate me. I don't associate this guitar with EC. probably again because it was before my time. I kinda knew about his beano burst and the SG he was know to have back then but until this replica was announced I had never heard about this 58Custom. And i guess after reading some of the comments on this I guess it was more well known of than I thought.
I am a Jimmy Page fan and he also had a replica Custom LP made several years ago and I also don't really associate that guitar with him either.
I guess I was born to late :(
Strats for EC and 59standards for JP are what I know.
for those that get one of these enjoy!

While I fully appreciate and understand your perception... I encourage you to dig into Beano and Cream sounds on associated recordings, which were Gibson Humbuckers (LP Standard, LP Custom, SG) into big Marshalls.

That rig, and the Clapton-dubbed "woman tone," really took EC from the early noteriety of 'Clapton Is God' and propelled him to worldwide acclaim. Exploring those tones is a worthwhile endeavor!

It's also remarkable that Page's explosive exposure into guitar hero status was mostly built upon Telecaster into various non-Marshall amps, yet his persistent image remains the Number 1 LP Standard into Marshalls.

Pretty cool, and the price is not that outlandish given some other Gibson special releases lately. I like the look, even with the aging. Might even sound and play good, you never know, and I'm sure some of the buyers will never know either.

In Page's case the Telecaster was mainly played in studio (LZ1 and Stairway most notably) where nobody could see him, and most of the listening audience (except for geeks like us) didn't know or care that it was a Tele anyway. But EVERYBODY saw him airing out that LP through the Marshalls onstage throughout the 70s and that IS his "persistent image" and how he became "known".

He became known because of the sound not the image.

Mike..just go ahead and buy one and get it out of the way 😂
Gary,

If you read my previous post, I am eating my words because I did get one! :ROFLMAO: Played it with my band on Monday! Pretty cool guitar. Neck feels good, sounds good, and the best part is that it's below 9 lbs. I've not played a Custom before that was that light.

Have you compared it to your old one?
That would be nice to hear or hear about...
