• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Can a LP "Classic" be made to a "Standard" just by switching out the pickups? Then following swapping out some of the hardware? I'm not sure was the difference is.

In the current crop the Standard is non-weight relieved and the Classic is nine-hole weight relieved. The Classic has advanced switching options and the Standard has the "standard" three-way switch only. Oddly, the last bunch was reversed, with the Standard having modern weight relief and the Classic being non-relieved. The Standard also had an asymmetrical neck and the Classic had a slim taper neck and the advanced switching options were on the Standard. That would make the answer "NO," changing the P/Us doesn't do it.

Is this a hypothetical or are you really shopping?

Another perspective would be: assess the resonance, apart from the weight and weight-relief, of 2 (actually, as many as you can lay hands on....) examples of both.

If you are 'A/B'ing for your numero uno and don't have a stable, if you picked from among examples of both Standard and Classic, and liked the acoustic resonance and feel of one versus the other, then decide on what you absolutely need for electronics and HW.

Caveat, the pickups and hardware would of course color the outcome in each individual guitar -- thus, there is no equivalence but only approximate ball parking anyways. True between Standards, too.

Pick the one you like best, there is no right answer.

If you really want a new Cherry or Ebony (or like the Honeyburst) LP instead of a Standard-bursted top... there is no worry about 2nd class citizenship. You'll save $400 to put toward mods, if you so desire.

I just wasn't sure what the actual differences were in the two.

I have a 16 Trad, 19 Classic and 21 Standard when playing them they are so similar sometimes I forget which one is which ! My 16 trad I had the neck shaped down to a 60's profile at Lay's in Akron, I just prefer a 60s neck I found out and rather than getting rid of it I had the neck done. I also have Norlin era LPs and the 1980 black standard is an anchor compared to the newer ones..

Don't Classics say "Classic" at the end and under "Les Paul"? You can change all you want but you're going to have a guitar that says "Classic" right there on the headstock.
