• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Here's a swampy groove for everyone to take a shot at. I left some stops in the third verse, so let it rip in that section.
I hope I got the jam number right. I think this should be 22.

hey you guys sound good! I get kind of a nice skynyrd vibe from Guitar G's track.

Toecutter would make luther allison get back up;)

What do you guys use to lay these solos over the jam track?

A modeller/DI or a home studio with mic'ed amps?

Thanks guy's!

GuitarG - sweet sounds man! Did you finger pick that Tele? It kind of has that sound. And the 335 works great for slide. Man, it sounds really swampy.

toecutter - always a great sound from you. Nice licks, I really like your work in the third verse open sections.

I almost always use a mic'd amp. I do have a POD which is fun to use on occasion, but I haven't used it in months. On this track I used a Blackface Vibrochamp for everything. The thythm track was using the champ's speaker and for the solo sections I plugged it into a 4 ohm 2x12" combo cab. I did my tracks at about 6 this morning so everything I did was at very low volume, around 3 or 4 on the champ.

Thanks Slim, I'm using my fingers for all the guitars on that track. The 335 is tuned standard and I'm doing a half fretted notes, half slide thing.

FuzzWas- Thanks man, I dig listening to the late great luther allison!

As for as recording it's pretty simple to get started. The main thing you need is a recording program for your PC and a sound card. I hear there are some good shareware/freeware programs out there. I'm using Cakewalk's Guitar Tracks Pro, with a Soundblaster live card. It's ultra simple to use. I'll first convert the backing track (MP3) file to a WAV file then Import it into a track on the recording software. Once you've done that, all you need to do is lay your guitar track down on another track (it's just like using a multitrack recorder, sound with sound). As far as recording your guitar. You can mike an amp, which works well with a decent mike. Or you can, as I've done on this track, use an amp simulator (Behringer VAMP2). The nice thing about the amp simulator, you plug it directly into the sound card, you don't need to worry about house noises (Kits, dogs, wives, etc.). I used my 2000 59 Les Paul reissue on this track.

Minneapolis Slim- thanks, I'll be waiting for your track also :dude

hottub, great blusey sounding thang. I loved that piece you did about 0:40 secs in, great phrasing there!

Thanks for sharing.

FuzzWas, toecutter nailed it on the process. That's exactly what I do. I use a shareware program for recording called n-Track Studio. Costs about $40 to register and it's worth it. You can find it at www.fasoft.com I run my Trademark 10 direct to the computer, very low volume recording situation for me. The wife's not even aware of when I'm recording something half the time.

Toe, yeah man Bucks County! I was a Warminster native for a couple of years, in fact, my grandparents still live there. Mostly though, growing up, I was in Horsham. Im still in Montco County up around Valley Forge area.

Minneapolis Slim, nice track man!!

I have a question for you guys, I too use Guitar Tracks Pro and do the import WAV file thing, however, my tracks always come out with lower volume and not so full sounding. Also my track is usually not blended with the mix as good. Any tips or tricks you can share? Are there options or settings in the software I need to check out ?

Sorry for being off topic but holy f*ck, I used to live in Horsham. My folks worked at the willow grove n.a.s. right off of 611. Lived there till I was in the 8th grade. I haven't been back in a while but I'm trying to find the time and money to get up there.

Toecutter - Love your tone on this track. How are ya liking the vAmp? I was thinking about getting one since I moved back in w/ the folks and they don't particularly like me jamming away at 3 am.

hottub, do you try to adjust the volumes of the tracks when you play them back to make sure they're mixed good? Just getting your track down is only half the battle. Doing a mixdown is the other half. I always play with the relative volumes to make sure it sounds mixed together well, then adjust the overall volume so it's as high as I can get it with no clipping. This makes the playback louder. I also record my amp dry and add reverb in the recording software. Lot's of stuff you can do to make it sound fuller, that's part of the fun ;)
