I've used Luxe Bumblebees in the past and have always been satisfied with them. For this particular guitar tho I want to use Black Beauties. Are the RI Luxe Bees and Beauties the same cap, is it just a cosmetic thing? I know the old Bees, like the Luxe RI's, were paper and oil. I've always heard the original Black Beauties were Mylar or some such thing. I've seen the RI Bees and Beauties advertised as both being paper and oil. Does anyone know for sure. Also, what will an .015 in the neck do for me that a .022 wouldn't or rather what makes some prefer this? Lastly, does anybody have a source for these/ The guys I've used in the past don't sell them anymore. Thanks for your help.

Ask Donovan at Luxe. He is a pretty nice guy and very open about the type and manufacture of each type of cap.

One is paper and oil (bumblebee), the other (Black Beauty) is paper and foil if memory serves.

I think the Luxe Bees are now handmade PIO as opposed to russion PIO that they used to be. I think you can get them without the fancy box for cheaper too.

From what I've read, Gibson switched from PIO caps to Mylar in late '59. The Black Beauties came in the early 60s.

To be more correct, Sprague, who actually MADE the caps, switched from PIO to Mylar in late '59.

The later `59 "Bee's" are the same cap as the 160P's. you can tell which one is which by the oil filler spout on one end. If it has the spout, it's PIO, if it doesn't it's Mylar. Both are really great sounding caps!
