M2M R9 ordered. Should I add an R7 or a 51 telecaster reissue?

Hi everyone!

I'm in the process of ordering an M2M ULA R9 which should take around 12 to 18 months to complete. In the mean time, I want to buy another guitar. I need your advice between a VOS R7 goldtop DB (which I've been wanting for awhile but also thinking I will end up with 2 very similar guitars) and something very different and also quite cheaper, namely an AVII 51 butterscotch blonde telecaster. What are your pros & cons?

Thanks for your feedback!

How 'bout a 54 or 56 so's it be different in many more ways?

A tele is nice as well, i would not fault you there, but a 54 LP will have different pickups and the wrap tail and is one of my favs.

And it is different enough to not be "the same thang".

57's are great, but yes, it is a lot closer to the 59.

If it does not match you style a 335 is ALSO a fantastic choice...

Thanks @renderit, you've got some valid points. A Les Paul with P90s would be a nice difference and I could still get a lovely goldtop! Or go for the TV special...
335s were the first guitars I liked back then, as a fan of Chuck Berry and BB King. I don't think I would play a lot today though

Yeah, reelings towards a vintage reissue tele and mod it with a 22 frets neck (and down the line, maybe different PUs). Not going the custom shop route though, because contrary to Gibson I don't think the price is worth it

I would add an R6 and a TV Yellow Special with a wraparound.

And I would buy an R7 over an R9 any day.

I ended up with the ES Les Paul over a solid body for my humbuckered LP.

One P-90 goldtop is a Less Plus and one is a full bodied Tokai.

The range of tones and feels I can get out of these four guitars is pretty amazing.

If I had a Tele, any Tele, I would never play it.

JMHO.

R9 is already on order. So if I don't go the tele way, my options boil down to either a 56 goldtop or a 57 tv special. Tough decisions! Haha!

I recommend that you have a play with an R4 and an R6 (if possible) to see what you prefer... a good R4 is really hard to beat IMO.

Then again there will still be a fair amount of crossover between the R9 and the R4/R6, especially when playing with overdrive. A Tele + the R9 will give you a lot more versatility than 2 x Les Paul's.

I recently got a 56 and loved the neck so much I immediately got a 57 with the same neck shape. When I played my 59 I thought it doesn't get any better than this. Then it did!

If I might be so bold as to offer a different take my favorite guitars all share a certain formula. I always wanted a '54 Black Beauty, but $ wise could never quite justify it. My answer was to modify a couple of my own to be closer in terms of tone.

First up was a rare '71 LP Standard factory order I pulled the Dimarzio Super Distortions the previous owner had put in and replaced with the first set of Dual Tone II's Steven Kersting had made as a custom order for me. With all the options available that guitar always stayed on the P90 coil for the bridge and the A5 rod magnet coil neck settings. I was hooked from the start. It provides the perfect broad palette of tones, from gorgeous clean neck tones to raw and pissed off bridge tones.

After that the second was a '61 SG RI I modified by swapping in a BG Pure 90 bridge, and a TV Jones T-Armond neck.

Third was a LP Special P90 I pulled the neck P90 out of and replaced with a Seymour Duncan Custom Shop A5 Staple.

The fourth was an '85 Explorer III I pulled the neck pickup from and replaced with one of the new Gibson A5 Soapbars from a Gary Clark SG.

The fifth was the Gary Clark SG which I pulled the bridge pickup from and replaced it with a Seymour Duncan Vintage P90

And last up is my Gibson Adam Jones LP Std where I replaced the bridge pickup with another BG Pure 90, and the neck pickup with a Seymour Duncan Dynabucker single coil.

There is just something uniquely beautiful in the pairing of an A5 rod magnet Staple or Dynasonic type pickup at the neck with a P90 bridge pickup. It greatly expands the tonal range of the guitars far beyond what is normally associated with the sound of most Gibsons. The greater range and practical usage of the neck and middle settings in particular is a breath of fresh air. The chime, articulation, and spank of the neck and middle tones will make any Fender blush, and yet they still have more heft and balls than most Fenders.

Basically if you are already spending that kind of coin, love the '50s neck carve, and want a Guitar that will have a distinct tone and greater range of tones than your other Gibsons an R4 Black Beauty would give you some mojo no other stock Gibson can come close to.
