• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Magnet movement in P90

I unscrewed the bridge P90 on my LP Special to shim it up a little. I noticed that one of the magnets is about 1/8" away from the pole piece screws. The other magnet, and both in the neck pup are touching the screws.

P90 magnets are opposing so can force apart a bit and it's not uncommon. Question is does it matter? Lower output, different tone? It sounds great, I've owned it for 25 years and this is the first time I've looked, might have always been that way.

The cable from the pup to the volume pot hasn't got much slack in it so I'd have to de-solder in order to extract the pickup, or at least to tilt it enough to get to the base plate screws and hence move the magnet.

I've put it all back together now, with fresh strings. So this is maybe something I'll do next time I change the strings. It's an old one, '60, but the bridge pickup has been unsoldered before when I had to remove the volume pot for a strip down and clean. So I won't be breaking original solder joints! Not that that would bother me too much - if something needs fixing you have to do it.
