• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Making the Gibson Les Paul Custom Shop 2021 even better!!

You can clearly see the body stands proud to the the neck , could this be shrinking from steam ? Please explain is the fretboard separation from the neck .

I'm not convinced of a defective assembly, I'm convinced of a result of process removing , I would think Kim at HM would slap something like this on his web site !

Disclaimer : We see it & most like me believe it's not a factory flaw , hard to accept Florian's blanket statement as to how repetitive this is .
So you think this happends in the process from removing the old fretboard before installing the brazilian board?

Gibson Custom will build you what you want going thru a Gibson Custom Authentic dealer like the Music zoo for instance and all it takes is the $ .They do a fantastic job as I have one M2M and 2 more on the way shortly and I couldn't have been any more happier!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was quoted $5,500 for a M2M Firebird 1 by the Music Zoo. Steep for a regular build with nothing fancy.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but bridge/tailpiece materials for late 50s is:

Brass posts, thumbwheels, bridge, saddles, and tailpiece studs

Steel tailpiece anchors

Aluminum tailpiece?

Just a reference to the fact that technically Gibson could be doing stuff like this with reissues and it’d be historically accurate, after all this is a factory original neck joint on a real burst.

It must sound terrible, especially if someone emails you and tells you so 👀

EDIT: In fact, let’s go one better than that.

This is an original 59 burst that Florian himself refinished and had in his shop for a good period of time. How come he didn’t refit the neck?

Yet another guitar that must sound absolutely awful, what a shame 😉

Im not trying to torpedo anyone here or diminish a talented Luther , I have a lot of faith & respect for Gibson although not faultless . The more I visit this thread the less I grasp the issue, I have been a Gibson customer since 73 . I believe in 83 I received my Guitar Trader Burst , 93 - 94 ordered my Historic 57 R7 & many many Historic's I play and have in stands around my house IMO these are really great guitars . I can only look at these disassembled non factory altered & reassembled guitars as nothing I would ever consider owning . Yes I have owned jazz guitars that had neck sets let's call mantainace . To remove a set neck Gibson solid body to make it better repair all the factory flaws ? Replace a fingerboard do to a tree grown in Brazil ? Ive owned dozens of Brazilian fingerboards I don't get it ? I have most if not all very dark heartwood boards Beautiful ! Don't be offended by my opinion . Yes I'm the A hole that sneers at your altered guitar on Reverb .

I second your sentiments as well and to me it seems much ado about nada . It's like trying to reinvent the wheel . I do have a photo that I tried to post yesterday that clearly shows this view when the Custombuckers were removed and I think I will send it to you and maybe you could post it for me .

Just look at El Gringos R9 other than pickups , Would you take a M2M have Someone destroy the Finish & factory Vibe , Not mention what another $4500.00 or so .
What kind of resales do these Make overs have !

From my browsing of Reverb.com , it seems to me that the person shelling out the extra bucks for this style of treatment does not recoup his $ as evidenced from the prices being asked for and based on what sells and what sits . Which is fine and dandy for the individual or person that seeks out this treatment , but don't expect a windfall if you decide to flip it down the line .

I don't think I would ever take collector's choice or M2M guitar and send it off for a makeover. However, in my case, the factory finish was already faulty and would easily chip from the slightest reasonable contact. Gibson wanted at least $1000 to refinish it, so to me it made sense to send it in for a full makeover given I could now get a Brazilian board and even deeper dish carve as well as the Magellan neck carve.

As far as the money and resale, who gives a shit. If you you can afford it and it makes you happy, go for it. Guitars are are a relatively cheap hobby, all things considered.

How did your guitar get those dings ? Is it something to do with a guitar stand ?

The guitar was mint when I got it from a client as partial payment for a bill. I had it for a few months but didn't play it much.

I lent it to a friend of mine who was recording an album and he damaged the finished as shown in the pictures. He claims he was just setting the guitar on the floor throughout the session and did not notice it was getting damaged. Perhaps this guitar's finish was defective from the factory but who knows. I also lightly tapped the headstock on a cymbal, and it also cracked and flaked off the finish there as well. I sent the pictures to Gibson and that they "estimated" that they'd charge around $1000 to refinish the guitar, which I felt was a waste of money, given what a shitty job they did from the factory. I told Kim about it to see if he could just "fix" it and he told me that the lacquer he uses would not adhere with the existing lacquer on the guitar and suggested that I let him just refinish it. At first I was only going have him refinish it but I decided to go for the full deluxe while I'm at it-in for a penny in for pound.

Other than the finish problems, the guitar has a killer top and plays great! Here are a few pictures of the top:
