• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Making the Gibson Les Paul Custom Shop 2021 even better!!

We should all write that a hundred times on a chalk board . How many times have we heard that a vintage Gibson was good but not great ? Just like anything in life - some are perfect and some are not . Also these instruments are not cookie cutter assembled -vintage or Gibson Custom , and a lot of hard hand work was involved as well . I just love how there always is someone who says " they " can make it better . So has that person or individual been building them since the late 1800's ? Also I think it bears mentioning that "Only A Gibson is Good Enough "

Lol. This whole thing with the neck joint is a bunch of bullshIt pure and simple. There‘s No proof or documentation about any of it. Just a lot of hot air blather. It would almost be humorous if there wasn‘tso much other erroneous nonsense already floating around. Some folks can’t help chasing their own tail.

I happen to be fortunate enough to own so many great guitars both new and vintage, there’s not enough time in the day to play them all. As I’ve gotten better so have my guitars. I’m beginning to think that the people who fixate on this minutiae, spend more time ruminating and obsessing than playing. Bottom line, If you can’t really play, no guitar not even the Greeny Burst will sound good.

I can't believe top cutaway neck joint diagram is correct " vintage " Heres a 58 ES 335 I will be looking for a Burst joint .View attachment 13046

I'm sure Florian will have loads of pics from all those bursts that need the neck resetting, just like every single Historic ever.

Strange how that burst earlier that didn't have a perfect neck cavity was left alone though, seeing as it's so important and how terrible it must sound otherwise...

A most beautiful Les Paul Jr. in Vintage Sunburst , and oh so delicious with a single dog ear ( did I identify the pickup correctly ? ) P-90 . Now please tell me more , such as year and neck size and such . Also do you play this Jr. thru a Fender or a Marshall or another amp . How does she sound ? I will no go out on a limb and guess she is Vintage because of the banner on the rear of the headtsock ?

Have you listened to the Johan Segeborn link that I believe kicked off this thread? B/c while generally I would agree with you, when it comes to the bridge, they’ve left plenty of room for improvement, as is quickly and clearly demonstrated.
yes ive seen the video, an its a matter of taste as to which you prefer the sound of..

Wow , seriously blown away ! I love that the neck has some beef to it . I also love the up grade in pickups and pots . I also love your sonic firepower as you sure have some nice variety for tone in your amps . Bravo (y)

Hi - sorry if I've missed it somewhere; but is the video / chap correct regarding vintage and modern Custom Shop scale length being different? Don't think I've heard that being spoken of before?
This has been claimed many times before by many people. Including, but not limited to, Paul Reed Smith who made the PRS 594 to supposedly have the correct vintage Les Paul scale, (i.e., 24.594).

See https://www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/whats-a-les-pauls-scale-length-really.1875288/

I think sometimes in life we get caught up in minutiae and small trivial details and we can forget the big picture of making music and the wonderful sounds that come from a Gibson Les Paul . Regardless of if it's a Vintage Burst , a Gibson USA guitar , or a Gibson Custom guitar . The instrument is intended to be played and to have "fun" and bring Joy to the ears .

I agree with you wholeheartedly. These Les Pauls we love from the 50s were not magically brought down by Moses from Mount Sinai. They were made by regular people who lived around Kalamazoo using whatever parts Gibson could reasonably source at the time. They were used by the guitar heroes we all admire today because that was what was available to them at the time.

At the end of the day, play your guitar and have fun. All the minor details can easily take some of the fun out playing when, by overthinking things, we begin to believe that our guitars are not as good for some reason.
