• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Guys

I wanna try these out - can someone let me know which "voltage" is preferable for a guitar circuit?? I have seen 250v, 630v and 400V, not sure if one is preferable or if there is any diff in performance. Also - is there a certain tolerance to look for??

Finally - where's the best place to buy these??

Any voltage rating will do. Your dealing with millivolts generated by the pickups.

Go with the lower voltage caps for your guitar's tone control. The higher the voltage rating the larger the physical size of the cap will be.

If you believe, as engineers do, that capacitors only do in your guitar what they do on paper, then smaller voltage values are fine. But, if you believe as I do, that the material composition of the capacitors adds something to the tonal signature of your guitar, then you'll want larger values to get more material, and thus more of the cap's sound.

Perhaps with the long shaft pots size is a consideration, but with regular CTS pots there's plenty of room to hold at least 8 600v caps.

Wow - as I suspected, different opinions!! :)

I think I read somewhere that 400V was/is what Gibson used?? If so, I guess in the interest of being historically correct, I may go w/ the 400's.........

-I've been thinking of trying these in place of my Orange Drops sometime. Not in a big rush, just whenever I get around to it. The O.D. caps sound good but I just have to tinker you know.

Which OD's? ...223P or 715P/716P they are different caps (there is more than 1 type of OD), the 223's which somehow get into most guitar players hands are Polyester (Mylar) caps and the 715/716 are Polypropylene, they are different, and sound a bit different.

The Sprague Orange Drop 223's are the same/similar as Mallory 150's so if that is what you have now you won't be in for a noticable change, the 715/716 are better as far as OD's go(IMHO).

-If I remember correctly, I have the O.D. 223s in it. A .022 for the bridge and a .015 for the neck. But I'll have pop the rear cover off to be sure. I just can't quite remember right now. I just home from working the graveyard.

-Mainah. I have that Sozo site saved in my favorites. I pretty much forgot about them until now. Thanks for the reminder.
