• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Really CD? Not to be controversial, or stir up stuff but... I thought "Money For Nothing" might be the single worst example of guitar tone... ever:wah. That was a burst wasn't it? If not, I apologize. I always loved Mark's Strat sounds, those were great.

Horses for courses! :dude:

I hear more "rack" than burst, everytime I hear Mark play an LP. Here's my counteroffer...

That vid of JD, that I posted above: every time I think I'm kind of getting it together, either tone-wise, or playing-wise... I watch that vid to remind me that I gotta keep working. That's like LP "reference tone" in my mind. Some of the best phrasing, outside of BB, Freddie or any other blues master... you'll ever hear as well.

Can't wait for the album and him coming to Sweden :peace2 !

Hey roadrunner, I'm not usually one to try and persuade people to like this or that, it rarely leads anywhere. But if you have the time, there are so many wonderful LP tones through the years from Mark (I actually think Money for nothing has a cool sound, but I undestand what you mean. It's an 80's reissue on that song BTW). This song comes to mind:

That was recorded back in 1984 with a 1984 Les Paul Standard through a JTM 45 and a wah pedal. He didn't get a Burst until Gary Winterflood hooked him up with a '58 and '59 in 1995 from what I understand. You must remember he has been a solo artist for 22 years now and the Dire Straits stuff was long ago. (He stopped playing Money For Nothing live about 5 or 6 years ago)

He has used the '58 on every album since he turned solo. His tone with that guitar on the Shangri-La album in 2004 to me is his finest. :salude

For me Knopfler's more understated playing with his Burst is the finest work he does. Below is Back To Tupelo from his Shangri-La album. Combine that with his songwriting and story telling (in the case of this song about Elvis and Colonel Tom Parker) and it's a wonderful combination.

FWIW, the man can play and his fingerstyle playing adds a twist that most Burst slingers don't have. I like it a lot but it is a bit too refined in the long run. Definitely prefer his early Strat playing but you hear it's him, regardless of the guitar he uses. That's a heck of an accomplishment, IMO.
Didn't Mark use Crate VC amps for a long time?:peace2

Ha! Laura!! Laura, man... I hope she plays a show in Nashville one of these days. LOVE that girl!!

Huge amount of respect for Mark here and yes I agree, he's got his own sound and that's a giant accomplishment for any musician. Charlie's an old, old friend that I love and I respect that he digs Mark's thing. I don't dig Mark's LP thing so much and that's not a knock on Mark or Charlie, it's just a personal preference for me... it would be a totally boring world if we all liked the same stuff, wouldn't it?
Now let's talk about snack food... I love pickled cocktail onions! Yum, my fave snack, eat 'em straight outta the jar, who's with me???!!
