• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

I just got a used 50w plexi this looks like that it has been modded at some time and it has been made to stay very clean.

I am looking to turn it into a high gain amp any recomendations

Without some pictures of the inside it's virtually impossible to say what has been modded and how to get your sound going.

Is this from the 60's or is it a reissue? EVH used a 100 watt '67 Plexi loaded with NOS Sylvania 6CA7 power tubes and (probably) NOS Sylvania 12ax7a preamp tubes. Probably used a Variac set to 90 volts too. And don't forget the Phase 90 set to minimum and an EQ with an inverted 'U' curve...

Yeah, put that amp back yo stock to preserve it and buy a new high gain amp!!! If there's not a lot of mods already done to it, why waste another classic amp on a high gain project???

Maybe an obvious question, but I'll ask anyway. You say it stays very clean... Are you cranking it up? You really need to get these old plexis up to around 7 or 8 to get any real gain going, and maybe up to 10 to get into VH territory. And even at that level you'd probably need to boost it with a pedal.

Do you know if it's the lead or bass circuit? The lead circuit will have a bit more gain and bite than the bass circuit.

And if it's all original inside, I wouldn't mod it. You'll instantly reduce it's value, and you could easily tweak it in other ways, like trying different tubes. Maybe some EL34s will wake this beast up? And some RFT 12AX7s...

For classic, VH, crank a good Plexi to 10, add a MXR EQ with a frown and your there. I use a MXR GE10, and it rules for getting old EVH tones.:peace2

Bridge the channels together, set all controls on 10, play a humbucker equipped axe through that thing and you should be close enough for government work.

If it's causing your ears to bleed, get an attenuator. You got a great amp there, and it may just be you need to figure out how to find your tone on it.

If the amp is already modded, you need to post a photo of the guts. Only then will folks here be able to look at it and tell you what you need to change to get it back to stock, or get it closer to where you need to be to achieve your tone quest.

Clean? Sounds like you're not turning it up. A Plexi doesn't get nasty until the volume hits 5-6. Before that it'll give you some pretty nice jazz tones.

Yes the fabled soft-plexi tone.
I heard Joe Pass used to be a BIG closet plexi player. It's also a very little known fact that George Benson recorded his Breezin' album with a 1968 100 watter placed in the studio bathroom.

I had it on 10 very little distortion,i have decided to get it back to stock aand put some mullard El34's.

I have a chance on a modded plexi that i am told can do the evh tone quite well.

very little to put this one back to stock,it looks if it has never been gigged, this will stay in my collection.

what is the new fender evh amp like anyone tried one
