Anyone aware of the details of this guitars pedigree? Is it bone stock or have parts been changed; if so what changed. Anybody have some specs on it; weight, pickup output, repairs, refinish, changed parts, etc.?

IIRC it was owned by Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen before Macca. i think paul actually bought it from rick if i'm not mistaken.

Several threads in the past [including a Burst Pic of the Week], but I doubt they answer your more specific questions. Plenty of other pics though.

BTW: How do you measure "pickup output"? :hmm

Ah right, sorry. Resistance reading. How's that?
I studied all the pics on file, just trying to figure out why this guitar looks so different from other bursts around this serial number. It is an awesome looking guitar especially so considering the uniqueness of it being a rare left handed version. The guy can obviously afford and deserves the best and it appears he found it. Maybe Elliot knows a bit about this one; I read he had a shot at owning it at one time. I keep picturing an image in my mind of the Beatles on stage playing Come Together with Paul with this one, George with the red one, and John with the Special. That would have been a sight.

It makes me sick to think what that line of choice thinlines was going for, back then...

Also, think about this: Macca, being the world-class performer he is, might have decided he wanted a hotter set of PUs, a new nut, some different pots, a refret to his specs, etc...It's certain that at least some of these 'nuts n' bolts' mods were made by his tech.

My rhetorical question is: why is it OK that he gets a pass, but the rest of well-meaning owners are somehow sinning when they do the same common-sense things?

As I said, my question is rhetorical, and I know the answer: this insistence on strict originality is bullshit, and serves no one. I believe Ganzler alluded to this in a different post.

Questions, comments??

Your question is not only rhetorical, but also hypothetical.

From what I can see in the pics I have, the PUs look original, and the frets don't go over the binding, so they may well be original.
It's not sporting Grovers, Schallers or the like. The neck PU ring is cracked, and it's still on the guitar.

It seems that Sir Paul is taking good, respectful care of it. I'm not going to speculate about his "pass" until I see him using it.

The only "passes" I've seen issued are on guitars that had these mods when they were still mostly tools of the trade (albeit with a devout following).

Eliot Easton, who posts here often, said recently that as a lefty he was offered that guitar before Paul got it from Rick N. It was back in the 80s I think. It was more $ than he wanted to pay - at the time.

Interesting to see that McCartney must be getting some good use out of this guitar. The finish has faded quite a bit since the 1980's photo posted above by Dan.

I've seen many pics of McCartney playing that guitar live; it sure isn't spending much time in the closet or under the bed.

Please show a pic of this serial number. I have not heard that it looks different than others. :hmm

Where did you hear that this guitar had been alterd by [or for] Paul McCartney? Please give us the details on this, as I believe it is news to most of us. :)

What I'm saying is the finishes as they appear today vary allot around the McCarney burst serial number. It may be due to finish materials or just the way they have aged. You can follow the sequence by serial number. 0 1475 is shown below as well.

Hey lots of things I dream of have nothing to do with reality; that's a good thing as it is what the creative process is all about.
White stripes and Eagles of Death Metal are both outfits that don't use bassists, they seem to sell a few records...
