• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

This was Michael Allsup’s primary electric guitar for much of the 3 Dog Night recording sessions. It’s a beautiful looking Les Paul.

It was shown on the front cover of their 1970 album Naturally.

You can also see a few Morley guitar foot pedals, a few Marshall amps, and a red Gibson SG Electric guitar in the foreground. Those were the guitars he used on Joy To The World, Black and White, Liar, Sunlight etc. He also used a Fender Stratocaster, a Fender Telecaster, a Gibson ES 335 and a Gibson Chet Atkins nylon string guitar. 3 Dog Night is one band that most everybody I know likes. Joy To The World is a song that I think is still relevant today (and I recently purchased the Big Chill soundtrack at a thrift store recently. Great soundtrack, great movie.) As for my copy of Naturally, I bought it earlier this year at an auction held at my church. And that beautiful picture of Joe Schermie playing his natural Sixties Fender Jazz Bass (with the troll doll on the headstock...May he rest in piece!) he was a great bass player.

As for the Gibson Les Paul Michael Allsup played, he no longer owns it. It got auctioned off in 2010. Would love to know who owns it now.

Do you think Michael Allsup is a good guitarist? Do you like the pictures of his guitars? Are you a 3 Dog Night fan? Please let me know.

Absolutely, I am a 3 Dog Night fan. The guitar solo in Never Been to Spain is a classic.

And I also own the 45 of Black and White, the Golden Biscuits compilation L.P. and a various artists compilation that includes the 3 Dog Night cover of One by Harry Nilsson

I always liked his playing. Here's one of my favorites. I think he's playing the lead fills from 1:23 on, on an SG. Nice volume swells.

Oh, how about another?

Interesting tones again with the volume control.

I believe that Les Paul Custom had to be a '69 at the very least because I saw the band perform at Fillmore East August 2, 1969 and I remember him playing that guitar and thinking it looked really cool.

Here he is on 7-17-15 in Angola, Indiana at a Three Dog Night concert. He played a variety of strats that evening. The late Cory Wells is in the background. Mike sounded great that night. I always enjoyed his playing.

His playing and tone on "Captured Live at the Forum" is incredible. Saw them live in the 80s, but wish I could have seen them in the early 70s.
