Hey folks. I'm trying to help out a friend who is writing a book. Can anyone take a stab at what model/year of LP this is?

All I can say for certain is that these two photos were taken in 1986. Clearly, it's a custom. The colored stage lights make the finish hard to nail down, but the blonde looking headstock seems particularly unusual. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Gregor.

Is the Gibson logo and the split-diamond in black, or is that an effect of the stage lighting?

I've been looking through various sites and looking at old scanned catalogs. I can't find another example where the headstock veneer isn't black.

I ran into a couple when I was selling guitars for a certain large chain.
I don't remember all the details - this was 20+ years ago (before they went the route of the devil) - but we got in used a couple mid or late 70's Customs, in natural, one had a maple fretboard, the other was ebony, both had the natural maple headstock veneer.
I knew they were unusual even then, but I wasn't able to get a full story from them, even from the Gibson rep who saw them and said he would look into them.
Maybe Strings Jr has some information about them - he was in the factory then.

Definitely not a stock Custom. I don't recall ever seeing a peghead veneer like that in Nashville. The split diamonds and the logo look like abalone.
My guess is a late 70's / early 80's special order from Kalamazoo.

That's why I ask. Many back then had highly modified/customised guitars aftermarket. A book about a particular groups gear, One would think, might get answers by reaching out to them.

Looks like the headstock face has been sanded down to the veneer. I believe I see the epoxy filler around the "Gibson" inlay.

That certainly could be. Some odd work has clearly been done. The switch plate doesn't match the pick guard.
