• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

" The faster the solvent flashes (evaporates) the harder and more brittle the finish. " - renderit

now we are getting to the meat and potatoes .........
Now I will give you a helping of gravy.

All Murphy is doing (and don't take this as bad) is supplying you with a guitar that is further from an original spec 58,59,60 than a standard custom shop.

He is aging the guitar with the spray.

Ya see...nitro CONTINUES TO DRY OVER YEARS.

In 65 years a CS will look like a 59 does today.

The Murphy finish will have all fallen off...

But it will resemble a true 59 because it's finish will be mostly gone too unless you put it in a nitrogen filled case and don't touch it.

Guys, we all know that the finish is only one element of tone. Pickups, weight, strings, setup, etc. all matter. I have a Murphy Labs R9, and it is a great guitar - but I've got Hysterics all the way back from 1999 and many sound great as well. In fact, it was interesting lately that a colleague from work played a bunch of my R9s from several years, and the one that stood out to him the most was one of my Collectors Choice #6 models - you'll recall when Gibson released this model it was the year that they were laminating fretboards and everyone was criticizing this as adversely affecting tone and durability. Not! :ROFLMAO:

There once was an old man named Mr Twiddle
Who did not like gooey Nitro
He wanted it brittle ...

While spraying it one day
His plasticizer evaporated away
And his guitar ended up looking more like a Fiddle.

Custom shop nitro will age and check like ML from 2013 and on for sure. Don’t think so? Stick your guitar in a chest freezer and then put it in the blazing heat. I bet it checks. Just putting it in heat checked a little bit. At least my 2015 TH59 did

I seriously doubt it’ll all fall off. Parts of it will flake off. But my white 1974 LPC has nitro that flaked off on the bottom. Who cares? The guitar is still a guitar. I’d prefer a beat up 1959 Les Paul than one in pristine condition. Because if it’s played to hell? You know it was good.

My LPC? Was played to hell. And original owner asked me if his buddy who owned it and was selling it, “he still has that POS?” If it was a POS? He wouldn’t be played it so much right?

I just took delivery of a new 2021 R9 Murphy light aged and also have a 2019 R9 VOS. The Murphy has more sustain, complexity, acoustic volume, brightness, resonance (vibration), and woody sounding. Beats the VOS by about 10%
