• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

What is the legality of these items in your country? Here in Germany it is illegal to import them - if caught by Customs, they will be destroyed, and you may be prosecuted as well. Are they mostly bought by young people who want to "impress their (non-guitar-playing) friends"?
How would an extremely expensive 59 replica impress a non guitar player more or less than a reissue or in fact who in their right mind would buy any instrument to impress someone who doesn’t even play? Pretty dumb statement

I was under the impression that we're discussing cheap non-Gibson-made copies. The genuine Gibson Les Paul is such an iconic design it features in non-musical places, such as printed posters, CD racks and a well-known burger chain's logo. Any kid who grew up watching TOTP might even recognise one. A non-player might find it "cool", whereas a player might notice some differences.

read the thread from the start. The replicas we’re discussing (the OP) are more expensive and exceed the quality and accuracy compared to what Gibson can make on their mass fabrication line (including customshop)

If it's made by Gibson, it's not a fake.

Just looked through this thread. Very late to an apparently finished game, but...Use of the name Gibson and/or Les Paul on an instrument not made by Gibson is illegal and ethically questionable, at best. How is this debatable? If your standards allow you to finance, or carry out the build of a counterfeit "Les Paul" then by your deeds you are known.
I get that people want a more faithful version of the vintage 'burst than Gibson is currently making, but a respectful replica doesn't have an unauthorized logo prominently displayed. Cleverness is more becoming than fakery...

Like your 2002 R8 that doesn’t even stay in tune?
It does know after getting a new nut and a new ABR-1 Bridge . You know the old saying of there will always be a few bad apples in the bushel . Now this R8 stays in tune the best out of all of my Les Paul's . That was just a freak thing , as the 9 other Les Paul's (6 R9's ,2 R8's , 1 LPC , 1 LP PPC ) stay in tune as they should . My compliments on your very good memory ! It's all good :)

And with Max's usual fake story to go along with it. Alan Niven didn't have a guitar, he came to MusicWorks and Kris had the guitar hanging in the window. Foote lent the guitar to Niven, Slash tried it, loved it, took out the PAF's put in SD pickups instead and was off to the studio. Max has been taking credit for this for decades, and doesn't deserve it. My sources? Jim Foote and Alan Niven from 2002, while having lunch with them both at MusicWorks, I asked Niven about it all. Same old crap from Max.
