• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Picked this up from Mark's Guitar Loft yesterday. A mint condition 2003 Standard in Desertburst:

showpic.php

I thought I wanted a 50's neck, but this guitar feels like it was made for me. And the sound ... it's crossed my mind to unload every other guitar I own. NOT! But they won't be used much from now on ...

Mark, BTW, is an absolutely terrific guy. It was my first trip to his place, but it won't be my last.

I hope this photo copies over ...
So, I'm supposed to be rennovating the kitchen, but I can't stay away from this beauty. I must have played it for a good 4 hours last night, then woke up in the middle of the night and played it some more. :dude

Sweet! I'm drooling!

I'm just curious about your choice of necks. I am waiting on a new Desertburst Standard -- had to special order it, as I haven't seen any around my area -- and opted for the '50s neck. The LPs I recently played with the '50s neck didn't seem too bad, whereas some of the '60s slim tapers seemed almost too thin and unstable, tuning-wise. How would you compare yours to one with a '50s?

Man, yours sure is a beauty and I can't wait to bond with mine.

Thanks guys. I am seriously loving this axe.

I didn't actually choose the neck size. I have large hands & the classic I owned - the neck just seemed too thin for me. I also have a Smartwood Exotic (in Peroba) whose neck is a little thicker & rounder than a 60's neck. I really like the Smartwood's neck, so I thought a 50's neck would fit the bill for me. I actually traded for this guitar, so neck size wasn't an option. It just happens to work for me.

The 60's neck on this Standard feels beefier than the Classic's was. Certainly not as thick as a 50's, but large enough. It's very comfortable in my hand, where I never had a good feel for the Classic. I rarely played the Classic because I didn't like the feel of it. And, it was heavy. I don't have a reliable scale in my house, but I'm guessing this Standard weighs right at 8.5 - 9 lbs. Nice balance, too.

I hope you get yours soon. I haven't had this much fun since Mary Jane Pearsson let me play with her 40Ds right after the Junior Prom, and that was in 1970. :2lol

Muchas thanks for the info, Madstork. Your experience with the Classic sounds like mine. My hands are not huge -- smaller than most with shorter fingers than most -- and I thought, at first, hey this neck is great! Wrong! Too thin (even for me), too unstable ... I stuck with it a couple of years but wound up rarely playing it. I finally sold the thing and never looked back.

I can't wait to get my hands on this Standard, though. It might not be Jane Pearson's 40D's, but methinks it could almost have the same effect.

Should be by the end of the week. Where in NH do you live. I haven't seen any DesertBursts around Nashua, which is where I live.

I live in Manchester. I got this guitar from Mark's Guitar Loft - one of the Forum dealers.

I haven't seen any Desertbursts in this area, either. Plenty of Root Beers w/ 60's necks.

I'm glad to know I didn't overlook someone locally. Thanks. Maybe we'll meet sometime.

Maybe you know the answer to this: when did Gibson stop making the Standdard Plus - or did they simply stop the Standard when they started making the Standard Premium Plus?

That would be cool. Post some pics of yours when it comes in, OK? BTW - who did you order it from?

I went through Sweetwater -- I wish I had stumbled on this Forum before I did, based on the great comments from members who have dealt with certain Forum-listed vendors. But I did speak at length several times with a guy there who seemed to know and understand what I wanted, and my concerns. I've also backed up some of my concerns regarding the quality I'm looking for in the instrument directly to a rep at Gibson. All things considered, I'm expecting a good instrument.

But, yep, I will certainly post a pic or two once I receive it, and will keep you in mind. It's great to stumble on another Granite-Stater!
