New Gibson Amps-What Happened?

I've decided I'm going to buy a new amp this year. I've been reading numerous threads here at LPF and doing research elsewhere on different makes and models I'm interested in. One thing I can't seem to find is any info on the new line of Gibson amps. Are they even being produced? Who is selling them? Has anyone here bought one? Any reviews on them? There doesn't seem to be much info anywhere on these. I was wondering if anyone here at LPF knew what happened. They look like interesting amps, albeit somewhat ugly, but the specs are quite impressive.

Thanks BB, but I've checked there and even went through their Amp Academy section last year when they first posted it. There's a lot of basic info on amp circuitry differences and also how the new amps were developed. But I'm wondering if you can even buy them yet. I haven't seen them on the Musician's Friend website for example. Not that MF is the only source for amps but I know they carried the Goldtones and all they have now are the GA-5's.

None in stock, though. I haven't seen any on the on-line sites where they are actually in stock. :hank

Well, I see someone posted on the Gibson site amplifier forum that his dealer (didn't say who the dealer is) says the amps are starting to ship. This was posted on 6/21/06. We'll see.

That's a shame about the head being discontinued. That was what I was interested in most. I've got combo amps coming out of my ears.

If that price for the 15 is right that is one incredible deal on what shoud be a great amp. The old Gibsons were under rated.I found in my own experiences with them that the coupling caps were just too small in an effort to keep the amp clean at higher volumes. I found that by opening the amps up with larger coupling caps really did give some wonderful mids and lower end sounds.
This also opened up the signal power so there was actually a nice bit of drive even through the old GA17RVT and others in those ranges. Of course a good Weber alnico 10 also helped in the 17 a lot.
Though I prefer the 6BQ5 amps and 6V6's to the 6AQ5's the same tricks seemed to work on all.
Gotta say the GoldTone series is one of the fullest and most musical amps I have ever heard. Just believing this new series will be just as nice.
And hand built with tube everything! For 999!

I remember reading that the head was designed by Mike Soldano. Could be that Gibson and Soldano never came to a formal agreement that they both could live with, hence the discontinuance.

Well I see Musician's Friend has the new GA20RVT on their website and it's listed as being in stock. Now we need some reviews. Has anyone here bought one yet? Any first impressions?

+1 on the price point. I assumed they were aiming for the "custom shop" crowd. Sounds like they were hip enough to design so you could A/B the channels also. Those double handles though, ugggh!

Oh yeah.....I remember reading about that. It is very easy that Mike and Gibson never came to an agreement. That doesn't surprise me at all.

Would have been a cool amp line, though. Shame it isn't going to be made (if that is indeed the case).
