• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

If it were Guitar Center, I'd say buy BOTH - they have a 30 day return policy!!!

Take them home, play them both through YOUR amp, at YOUR leisure, and decide which one feels / sounds better (IMHO looks do NOT count at this level... been there, done that), then return the one you don't want!

+1, also play them both in a live music setting if you have that option. If one is better for you it will be obvious IMO...

I prefer goldtops, but all things being equal, the R8 will have a higher resale value, and this will eventually become a concern (even if it's not one now). Then again, when it comes to guitars, there is no such thing as equal. You like one better...you just might not know it yet.

I'm back...

thanks all for the input. I spent the afternoon at the shop, with the two options I had, the R7 and the R8.
At first, I was going for the R7 (very big neck but with no shoulders, really ringy and loud acoustically, nice aging of the hardware). I followed your advice and took both to the iso booth in the shop and spent about 1,5 hour playing both guitars on a Marshall class 5, clean, crunch, dirty, switching guitars each time and well... the R8 won the battle! A bit lighter, punchier, clearer, a bit brighter, very nice feeling neck (almost like a friends R9) and most importantly, for some reason it is VERY easy to play. SO, even if I'm not a big fan of the tobacco surnburst, it's kind of growing on me, and I actually dig it.

A small pic here, and i'll put a few others on another thread. Nothing fancy, it's just a plain top, but it's all mine now ;)
