Hey All -- Really enjoying the new Joe B. Like so many here, I'm a huge Joe B. fan and this album exceeded my expectations.

There's plenty to like about this record. First and foremost for me are the hard grooving tunes with the "Tower of Power"-style horn section playing full throttle behind him. Hell, I LOVE this sound and wouldn't mind an entire record of just those style tunes at some point :)

One reason I believe this record sounds so damned good (in addition to the crackerjack production) is this awesome list of vintage gear I saw online (below). IMHO the tones he gets are simply masterful. There's one track (can't remember the name right now) where his Tele simply SCORCHES the Earth and then salts the ground behind it for good measure. Everything a Tele should sound like and then some, and I'm really glad he got that down on record. It'll provide a really nice reference point for younger players seeking out that sound in the future.

Anyway, there are also a ton of fantastic LP and Dumble tones on this record, which is great for die-hard guitar nuts like myself. Clearly, A LOT of care went into producing it. For old fans and new listeners alike, I'd definitely recommend this one. Joe did good. Real good.

BONUS -- I've got the EU Vinyl which sounds FANTASTIC -- Dynamic Range of 12, which makes it supremely crankable. Cheers all!

Hard to beat a '62 Deluxe, right? :) Pretty much as good as it gets for a smaller amp.

I listened to this record yesterday, and I gotta say, I prefer the tone on Driving Towards The Daylight, most of the same gear as Different Shades Of Blue, and recorded in the same studio, but the DTTD tone is just smoother, and to me sounds more like quintessential JB.

This is great! Love the gear breakdown. I need to pick up the vinyl and any other JB vinyls I can get my hands on. Good to know he's pressing some for us junkies!

Bursts on vinyl, it doesn't get better than that,

PSA I first heard of Joe in the Tom Dowd documentary. Which is amazing! I immediately went out and got the album and caught him here in San Diego shortly thereafter. <Small bar back in those days> Get the documentary it's killer.

@Django -- That's really interesting, because I had the exact OPPOSITE reaction. I thought Different Shades sounded way better than DTTD right out of the gate :)

Oh, well. Different takes and opinions are what makes it fun, right? IMHO it's a high-class problem for ALL OF US having to decide which Joe B. record sounds the best ;)

Yeah, that is interested, honestly I just like DTTD better in every way, I like DSOB and I am in no way bashing JB or his work, he is an amazing artist, and hands down my favorite player, but that's just my personal taste.

On a different note, I thought I'd bring up the sound Joe makes at the end of the Love Ain't A Love Song solo. He is smashing the heads of the echoplex he was using together just like Tommy Bolin on Billy Cobham's Spectrum. I was listening to the pickup radio show a few weeks ago and Joe mentioned he did this on his last album (I thought DTTD because DSOB hadn't come out yet, but I couldn't place what track, well I knew what he meant Immediatly when I listened to that track), He actually said he had to send his echoplex to the repair shop after doing that.

I've been listening to the album a bunch, and I love it!! This is without a doubt the best bunch of songs that Joe has written to date. "Love Ain't A Love Song" and "I Gave Up Everything For You, Cept The Blues" are both going to be added to my band's set list for certain!!!

Now the fun begins...trying to analyze which of this gear was used on what songs, at what parts. :##

I got this album in the post yesterday, I really like it so far. Quite a break from the saturated tones on the earlier albums, you can really hear the guitars and the amp tones. Great songwriting and performance too. It sounds more like a band playing live on this one.

I love the gear breakdowns too. FOUR Dumbles ! Here'a couple of pics of two of them from my Dumble Archive.

Rob, I'm gonna guess and say that's one of Paul's?

A real who's who list of vintage gear. In the right hands, I might add. :salude
