• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

New to the Vintage SG family/1971 SG Deluxe w/ bigsby!!!!

I just picked this up Thursday, and I haven't had a chance to get is set up proper yet,
but I'm working on it.

It does have some weird replacement wood bridge instead of the stock.
Other than the bridge, it seems to be stock.

Since the pickups look to be stock, but I'd like to know what Gibson
was using at that time. I couldn't find any info it.

I put a fresh set of 10's on it to see how this non-compensated bridge
would perform, and it just doesn't cut it.

I still got to hear the pickups, and they are loud, punchy, and a little
on the bright side. They do have a lot of bite compared to some of
my other guitars on the same amp setting.

Any suggestions on what replacement bridge I should get?

Should I get a roller bridge that would work better with the Bigsby?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Do you plan on doing dive-bombs or just a little wiggle-wiggle ?

That bridge looks interesting, like the previous owner was trying to warm it up ?

They make domed thumbwheels that work awesome with standard ABR and Bigsby. YMMV

Just depends on your playing style.

A little nut sauce on the ABR works just fine for me. YMMV

Good lookin fiddle ! :yah

The pickups should be Patent Sticker T-Tops. One of my favorite humbuckers.

My brother-in-law bought one about 15 years ago. It must have been a custom order without the Bigsby. It has a "Custom" truss rod cover. The seller tried selling it as a SG Custom!

The guitar doesn't intonate or play in tune to save its life, but man those pickups.

They loud bold and very clear. I was very impressed at the tone, and how easily they sustained.

They are amazing pickups. I just picked up a replacement bridge, so I'll be very eager to get it ready
to rock.

I have a 74 Special with mini's and a Gibson bigsby. Its feather light and has a harmonica bridge, which with it's long saddle travel might be ideal for fixing your intonation problem.

Thanks for showing me a pic of your guitar. I did pickup a bridge already, but the harmonica bridge looks interesting.
I really might have to look into one of those.

Yes, early patent stickered T-Tops on these SGs.

But i was always wondered, if the bridge pickup on these SGs isnt a bit darker sounding, cause the distance between the bridge and the pickup is much longer than on traditional SGs. :hmm
