• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Hi All !
i've been a Gibson man since my first electric some 29 years ago ( a '63 ES-345 ... ) but have turned towards a Lester only just recently. now i have found a slightly used Custom Shop Classic with a mahogany cap ( could be a one piece body even ) in a nicely faded dark cherry red color. the cosmetics are all fine - it's the tone i am unsure about. i have always been under the impression that the classic LP tone stems to a large part from the combination of the mahogany body with the maple cap. wouldn't a solid mahogany body ( like on the Specials ) coupled with humbuckers produce a tone that'd be too dark or even muddy ? on a Custom (i mean the ones without the maple top ) the ebony board brings back some of the brilliance, that i've also learned. the pups on the guitar in question are
Gibson '57 PAFs in zebra with a HOT PAF in the bridge. the sound i hear in my head goes in the direction of Duane Allman, Warren Haynes, David Grissom - low to medium gain, mild overdrive. would such a guitar deliver ? since i have never seen or played such a model LesPaul before i turn to you for some extra insights - any comments, shared experiances etc. are greatly welcomed !

That's a nice looking guitar. Ask the seller if he has some kind of return policy. You could check it out and if it wasn't quite what you were looking for, you could send it back. I've played some all mahogany Les Pauls that sounded great.

Good Luck

FWIW, my Neal Schon LP has an all mahogany build, and it's an extremely bright guitar. I guess you'd just have to play it to see if it's what you want, with the caveat that your choice of amp and how you EQ it also makes a world of difference.
