• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

i personally would not touch, any Historic especially a Brazil board , special run.

Thats just me though, and my 2 cents as a Collector and player of Historics.

If your are planning to keep it for life, then ….Ehh????….i still would not go that, route….as you always read, regarding guitar buying, in that if you can, you should try and play it first, too see if it sounds good to you…you then make the decision to buy it…i have bought guitars, online sure, 2 of my Historics were bought online, and maby i got lucky, but if they did not sound good, then i would go through the trouble to return ship..etc..

Plus Mark, Hand picks these things…soo right there allready you should have a good shot, at it being in the ball park.

Did you get it yet? Have you tried it? Not all Burst buckers sound the same, as all pickups sound different.Maby you will like this

As far as hurting value..for me yes..this is just me though, although a group of us (Collectors) have the same opinion, Although we are not the end all say all…however…if i personally was to buy this,or any Historic of any level…Collectors Choice, Crimson Custom…etc.. having been alterd..this way…it would be a $1500 hit minimum, even if the pickups that were installed were , Doyle Coils..

In the end it’s up too you..but this is my Humble opinion…ME..

I modded the hell out of my cc 13 & aged/signed Frehley burst - who cares?!! If your’e happy with it, that’s all that matters.

Did you buy it too play, enjoy & make music or are you a collector?
Can't I be/do both? :sneaky:

Seriously though, I'm going to set it up the way I want it.

If I ever hit hard times and need to sell it I'll deal with it then.

Wow, unsoldering 4 wires and preserving all of the original components intact so they could easily be restored to stock is a $1500 hit. Seems extreme. Not arguing, as I'm no value expert but... o_O

What if I put a set of real late 50's PAF's in it? ;)

Yeah, that’s the thing everyone’s different…for me, personally I would not even buy it…and yes I’ve passed on some Historics, because the harness was changed, or pickups swapped…so the $1500 deduction for me, is void, as well because of that

But that’s me…and how I think is

When you add a new guitar to your collection..if possible, you should try it first.See how it plays and sounds. If all those boxes check, and you have the means , to purchase it ..then you do that

Now…,you accepted the guitar, as it was?….

With that said…I have never bought a guitar, thinking..ehh it sounds ok?? But im not 100% satisfied with its sound, so i will experiment with pickups…it’s not that simple..the guitar has a soul…too me anyway…the wood, the way it’s finished…the metal parts , and the electronics. All those things were put together, at the end of the guitars completion.

As far as if the R9, had real 1950’s PAF’s installed?..well, that’s roughly a $10,000 set of pickups. With that said..what’s the price of the guitar then? $5500? Sure I’ll buy it..not going to happen though..would I pay $10K for a set of real PAF’s? ..No…

At the end of the day, it’s up to you man , not everyone is like me…but yes for me i pass on any guitar I am buying to collect as well as play, that has changed pickups, or anything like that.

This is (MY) opinion, as I’m chiming in, since you asked publicly

Hi @Gino753 Don't get me wrong I value your opinion and am grateful you provided a detailed response as to why you feel that way (the PAF's was just me adding a bit of humor). I think as a collector you have your criteria for detemining what is and what isn't worth adding to your collection. That is very useful information to me because I'm not a collector so seeing it from your prespective helps me understand that, what at first glance, may seem to be "no big deal" to me doesn't mean it is or isn't.

I am fully aware that I'm just the current owner of a rare guitar and that I could have a detrimental impact on to it's future. If I don't take that responsibity seriously I'm doing a disservice to the guitar and the peole who created it - it will most certainly out live me. That's why I asked here what the experts think.

Now, we'll just have to see how it sounds when it gets here tomorrow.

Thanks for your input and I will definitly keep it in mind going forward.

Maybe I'll do a "Poll" on TGP... because "Jake" my guitar tech pictured in my Avatar is no longer with us so I can't ask him... ;)

Well the '03 Les Paul R7 Brazilian “Stinger” arrived today from MGL and I was amazed at how it sounded.

I was playing it acoustically for a while and it just rings out with a clear voicing and it has tremendous sustain.

I did some adjustments on the BB2/BB3 pickups and balanced everything out the way I like it and it sounds perfect.

I'm not changing anything.

This is the best sounding and most playable Les Paul I've ever owned / played. (y)

Does anyone know if there were any '03 Les Paul MM R9 "Stingers" made with a Lemonburst finish?

I want to update my "Wish List"

That’s an R8

Yup, sorry! My bad.

IIRC there's 35 R9s which I believe were the most produced Rs in the series... hopefully there were bound to be some Lemons.

There are definitely M2M 'Stingers' in Lemon; perhaps none in Brazilian rosewood like the original MM run.

Good luck in the hunt.

Great to hear it sounds good. I don’t think there’s harm in changing out pickups though, and you’re right, $1500 hit for putting everything back to original? Nah. These might be collectable but they’re also a guitar that’s meant to be played.

Looks great - agree with earlier comment that the gold is one of the better tones. Congrats
