Hey all,
Picked this up at the SoCal Guitar show this past weekend. My first historic. Plays, sounds and looks great.

The dealers didn’t have much info on it as they’d just acquired it at the show the day before and hadn’t looked at the pickups or control cavity. Based on the inlays and tuners being parallel I’m pretty sure it is a 2001. Seemed like a good deal and opportunity to get in the R8 game...Hopefully it is what it appears to be…

Looks like the pots and caps have been modified. Both pickups have worn out PAF stickers…I think they were supposed to be 57 Classics.
I emailed Gibson to see if they can send me original specs. It has case candy but no COA, photo or identifying paperwork. I don’t know if it was supposed to have any of it.

Would love to hear your thoughts.

Edit: Gibson Customer Service confirmed it is a 2001 R8 with a Butterscotch finish. And sent me this sheet with original specs. They thought the pickups were stock, but couldn’t really offer any other info.

Thanks,

I love the yeller fronts with the bright red backs.

Note to Ken,

Still miss me Comic font.

This font ain't funny.

And the colors....

Jeez, the palette on the old was freakin' perfect wit all the Gibby Colors.

I could color the comments all night long to make them have flame and fierceness.

These remind me of Microsoft puke....

Sincerely,

Ren (the now pasty and humorless.)

P.S. I could PAY you! Consider this a bribe. Really! I am at me wits end...

truss rod cover right up against the nut, round-cornered inlays, butterscotch finish....yeah without seeing the control cavity, ya know its a 2001 R8. P'ups should be Classic 57's
I had 4 2001's. Two regular R8's and two R8 Custom Authentics. In '01, only the CA's had Burstbuckers (2/3)
Great guitars...looks awesome. Should have a somewhat chunky neck too. Enjoy

I can't locate a pic of the other regular '01. Gibson Custom did a great job with these R8 tops in 2001. Big necks...I only wish they had been a lot bigger...!!

Right on, thanks! Looks and sounds amazing. I'd read that 2001 R8s originally had orange drop caps, and it appears the pots are CTS with a 2021 date on them - which is why I thought it had been modded. I sent pics to Gibson. We'll see what they say.

Your correct about the Orange Drop Caps as soon as I read that I remembered that . So IMHO the wiring harness was upgraded and you benefited from that which is nice . Great guitar , now rock out and enjoy !

Yes Orange drops were stock and the pots were a so-so. I changed out the pots and caps on every Historic I had until my '20 R0 (my avatar pic). I did change out my R7. Ive always have used RS Guitarworks vintage prewired kits. They sound awesome with that upgrade. But my '20 R0.....sounds great as it is.

Beautiful, so past tense as they no longer belong to you ? I sure would have kept them as the figure on these are to die for !

as always I moved onto "better" things ( aka other Historics) after that were a slew of R7 Goldtops and BB Customs, SC and DC Jrs and Specials, a few R6's, a few R9's , a 335, a 330 a few 336/339's etc....
But the journey lead me to my 3 Monster Necks. After all the trouble, I finally got the Shop to get the necks right for me. Now??? I have my 2 lifers.

Well then I’m glad the previous owner swapped out pots and caps!! 😀 Wish I knew what they were!

Congratulations on a beautiful R8! Could be the electronics is an RS Guitarworks kit?

Thanks!!
From the pictures I’ve seen, RS Guitarworks has their logo on the capacitors. At least it appears that way on their website.
This setup kinda looks like a Throbak wiring harness…
