Not quite sure if this belongs in the Historic forum or the Other Gibsons forum but it is a “Les Paul SG Standard” per the COA so mods please move if needed……

I recently sold my older 1990 reissue ’62 SG. I had it since new but grew to like thicker neck profiles and I did not play it much recently due to its very thin neck. After selling it I quickly wished I had an SG again so I thought I’d seek out one of the Historic SGs that have thicker necks. I like aged reissues and when I saw this 2005 SG Standard, it looked like it might fit the bill. Not factory aged, it has a few bumps and bruises from real use yet the frets and fretboard are in great shape. The red on the top has faded noticeably and there are dark red areas under the bridge and tailpiece. I tried to photograph these areas but my camera would not pick up the difference in reds even though it is VERY apparent. It has lots of binding bleed too. Nice dark fretboard and a killer looking slab of striped mahogany. Based on some feedback from other forum members, I think it has ’57 Classic pickups and they sound great.

It plays fantastic after a pro setup. The neck angle is shallow and allows for the bridge to be set low and the tailpiece to be slammed all the way down. The tone is distinctly different than my R9s with lots of “kerrang” and bite. Bright but not harsh. Weighs in at 6lb 13.4oz.

A stunner. Congrats to you!

I can see the colour difference on the back compared to the front.

How would you describe the neck shape compared to an R9?

I love the look of these Historic SGs but they always seem to be advertised as a slim-taper and it puts me off, as I like you prefer a thicker neck.

Thanks!

The neck measures 0.827 @ the 1st fret and 0.900 at the 12th. It it absolutely thinner than the current R9 neck and the shape is different. The SG is a flat D shaped neck. It feels thin and wide. It is bigger than my old 1990 '62 reissue SG though which measured 0.750 at the 1st. I have played other Historic SGs with thicker necks and if you like a baseball bat you probably wouldn't be happy with this one. I can live with it - I've seen some of the Historic SGs listed with necks in the 0.840 range. I don't know how much difference that 0.013 would make :) I enjoy having guitars with different feels to them as long as they don't go to far to any extreme.

Excellent score, i have a list of future Historics I want, and this is one of them. I would also like to get a JR and another TH. It's funny, i used to hate SGs until i bought one, it's a USA Standard and now i need a historic to go with it.:salude

I had one I bought new @ Hollywood GC for about $2,200. in 2005. Sent it to Kim @ Historic Makeovers. Was a really nice guitar especially after the hide glue neck & fingerboard re-do and the Brazilian board. Ended up selling it about 2 years ago.. I'm just not an SG guy. I think they were only made for GC in 2005
