• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

1999 Darkburst R9.
Been digging the Y2K R9 a lot that I posted about few weeks ago, so when this one became available, pulled the trigger.
IIRC, the last time I had a '99 R9 was also a darkburst back in early to mid 2000 with exposed double white Antiquities that looked killer.
'99s and early Y2Ks have some of the best looking paints/finishes for my taste and the mahoganies during that time were nice.
Slightly mismatched pinstripe flame is cool, love the darkburst finish, and the cherry back finish is the best I've seen in person on a Historic.
It's the best overall painted Historic I've seen in a long time.

Fat C shape with little shoulders, very similar to the Y2K R9 neck, which makes it pretty much effortless to switch between the two.

The quality of the tone wood at this point was just exceptional. That Maple top is stunning

Would you describe the acoustic tonal response as bright and lively in character.?

Yup. It's one of the few that I love the feel, string tension, acoustic property, and sustain in its factory stock configuration that I'm very reluctant to swap the '57 Classics and the harness out (even with the stock modern wiring) in favor of the BB 2/3 set that we discussed in another thread and the real '58 Centralabs I have. It sounds brighter acoustically and amplified than the Y2K R9, which sounds warmer and smoother in comparison. Y2K does sound more 3D with more air under the notes and clearer (different from brightness) with the '01 BB 2/3 and a real '60 harness than the '99, so I'm contemplating every time I compare the two whether I should go ahead and do the surgery on the '99. Almost did it last weekend, but after looking at the clean & neat factory wiring, put the backplate back on and walked away. :)
