Thanks, goldtop0. The R4 is also a light one, around 8.2, but I put ThroBak P90s in it, so the pickups are a little different. But the R4 has always been a very bright sounding LP, which is what I like. The Special is also nice and bright, has the basic tone I like, but a bit less highs, a little rounder tone than the R4. The maple top does make the R4 a bit brighter. But they are both in the same ballpark. The necks are pretty similar, nice and big but not huge. The Special is just so comfortable to play, perfect balance, even sitting. It’s just a great LP, I had to grab it when I saw it.
@goldtop0 , yes, I have been around a long while, mostly dropping in occasionally, reading and keeping up with the evolving lines of Historic LPs. Thanks for noticing that!
I like seeing all the bursts, but have never owned one, being more of a goldtop fan myself. I also like P90s a lot. And I like light weight guitars, so I was happy to see this Special turn up at Dave’s and grabbed it right away. It is about as light as you can find, even for a Special. And I have a had a few goldtops, R4s & 6s, over the years, though I don’t always post about them. So yes, this new one is really great and will be a keeper. I had an R7 that was 8 lbs. at most, never should have let that go. Now I don’t even have a goldtop any more. My R4 is a limited run in Sweet Cherry, with a bit of flame, a 2013, also from Dave’s.
Beautiful guitar ! Also I have the same Fender Brown Super amp with the Wheat grill cloth .Recently acquired this new Custom Shop 57 RI LP Special. Sounds so sweet, and at 6.7 lbs, so light. Getting more playing time than my R4, will be the go to for gigs this year...once we get there. Love some TV yellow!
