• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Congrats on your new P90:cool:
What difference do you notice between this one and your R4.

Thanks, goldtop0. The R4 is also a light one, around 8.2, but I put ThroBak P90s in it, so the pickups are a little different. But the R4 has always been a very bright sounding LP, which is what I like. The Special is also nice and bright, has the basic tone I like, but a bit less highs, a little rounder tone than the R4. The maple top does make the R4 a bit brighter. But they are both in the same ballpark. The necks are pretty similar, nice and big but not huge. The Special is just so comfortable to play, perfect balance, even sitting. It’s just a great LP, I had to grab it when I saw it.

I've got a '13 R6 at 8lb 3oz with .970" at the 1st....... put a pair of '52 P90s in it to give a bit more old vibe.........love the P90 compared to a neck humbucker....... more clarity and bite to my ears.......... plus the bridge is a Tele on steroids(as they say). Overall it's a bright LP which is a little different to the humbuckered ones that are so popular...........suits me fine (y)
You've been around on this forum since the early days and posted very little so this newie of yours I take it is pretty special........thanks for sharing:cool:

Specials ARE special!

I also like playing them for a while then grabbing my Junior.

The subtleties between the soap bar and dog ear are beautiful.

@goldtop0 , yes, I have been around a long while, mostly dropping in occasionally, reading and keeping up with the evolving lines of Historic LPs. Thanks for noticing that!

I like seeing all the bursts, but have never owned one, being more of a goldtop fan myself. I also like P90s a lot. And I like light weight guitars, so I was happy to see this Special turn up at Dave’s and grabbed it right away. It is about as light as you can find, even for a Special. And I have a had a few goldtops, R4s & 6s, over the years, though I don’t always post about them. So yes, this new one is really great and will be a keeper. I had an R7 that was 8 lbs. at most, never should have let that go. Now I don’t even have a goldtop any more. My R4 is a limited run in Sweet Cherry, with a bit of flame, a 2013, also from Dave’s.

Years ago in '03 I started out on here looking for a GT(hence my pen name) but ended up with a braz R0 at the time. Since then I've had one or two more over the years with a '13 R7 that didn't cut it in the neck dept........not fat enough. So I've settled on a very resonant plaintop '13 R8 and the fatter necked '13 R6. Got a second hand gloss '14 '59 Nashville 335 last year from Tokyo(8lb 15oz) during lockdown which has a fatter neck, .940 at the 1st and am now waiting on a M2M tobacco sunburst lightweight specified fat necked 335 from customshop......... in the next 2 months hopefully.
I want to sit down with a R4 and compare it to my R6 but there are none around in this country(NZ) unfortunately..................so it goes.

That is a killer guitar man. My CS '60 TV Yellow Special is one of my top 3 regrets for guitars I sold/traded.

Recently acquired this new Custom Shop 57 RI LP Special. Sounds so sweet, and at 6.7 lbs, so light. Getting more playing time than my R4, will be the go to for gigs this year...once we get there. Love some TV yellow!
