I bought a black 74 LPC unseen mail order from a store in Germany. They told me it was a nice guitar. They lied. As well as having a collapsed bridge, the factory 2nd stamp and a large patch of buckle rash brush painted over, it had a clearly visible SEVEN PIECE maple top!!!!!!

Mail order is always a risk ... But you have the right to give it back I assume?

Old news and I did get my money back but I was astounded that even during the dreaded Norlin period Gibson were making top of the line Les Pauls with SEVEN piece tops! Three piece is expected but come on, seven?

Yes, there are some and not only with solid colors, even bursts. :hmm

And how did the guitar sound?

Texas Blues, nice axe ya' got there. I remember seeing those in the Music Emporium catalogs when they first came out, and then in person when Music Warehouse got one in store. I wanted one for the longest time. my first experiences and lusting after were all with Norlin era Les Pauls, and to this day, I defy ANYONE who says they're less playable, you can't get good tone, or make GREAT music on one. and that's what it's all about anyway, right?

And Bob Womack, you are falling under the spell of my voice (er... typing, I mean...) you WANT to sell your LP to me... you no longer WANT yours... you suddenly NEED the money for something else... LOL
(PM me if this is working, even in the least...) :teeth

Tex, that is the typical large Norlin era headstock. I don't mind it at all, in fact I like a lot of Norlin stuff. Not a slave to the 'burst and I like 'em just fine.

Mr. Womack, I love our wacky tobacky! My all time favorite Norlin model is the Rosewood top Les Paul Custom like Steve Denvers.

Yeah, I had my '74 'backy refretted in the '90s with medium jumbos and it is lovely, though heavy. I use it in the studio whenever I need some serious chunk! It's got a girth that none of my others seem to have.

I tracked down and bought a period case but the Ibanez/Univox case it came in actually supports it better so I transport it in that case you see behind me.

Gentlemen,

i have just purchased this beautiful Gibson Les Paul Custom, Maple neck.

Its supposed to be 1975, but i have a few questions, to make sure the guitar is original. I bought if of proved seller, but there are some things that worry me:

First confusing thing is the Serial number. Its only got 6 digits. 250280???

Pots are dated to 46th week of 1976. Treble bleed installed. I guess, it could have beed added by some previous owner.

It has pancake body.

Can anyone here confirm the status of this guitar? I will greatly appreciate any input you guys can give.

Beautiful one, i saw it on Bay. Its very late 76 or early 77 one, Kalamazoo made. One of the last with pancake bodies, still with early 70s serial number style (very rare in 76, but there are some).

And welcome here :)

Thank you so much! So you believe its a legitimate one?

They used 75 parts in late 76?

Should there be an S at the end of the serial number?

It looks totally legit. '76 or early '77 with the maple board is pretty cool... Progrocker111 knows his Norlins ---especially customs :)

Congrats :salude

Very cool/rare guitar. Most likely left the factory in early '77.

Pots made in Nov 76, packed, shipped to Gibson. Go into bin of pots, put into guitar... Guitar finished and shipped.
