• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

If you'll recall, John left voluntarily. Before leaving, he erased all of his posts. He has given no indication that he'd like to come back. Thus, it would appear to be a non-issue. Thankfully, he and I have remained friends and converse frequently. He's on Facebook and the Les Paul Society page on Facebook.:jim

So, what do you think it will take to get Banker back on board ?

I really miss him on these particular threads. I would've thought the thread title was enough. :hmm

Any ideas ? :yah

I certainly think the Forum is poorer for John's absence, but like Charlie says, one has to respect individual decisions. Friends keep in touch regardless of the medium.

Fwiw, I don't underestimate, for a moment, Blewsbreaker's knowledge....and am grateful for him sharing it.

:salude

As a public service broadcast, and straight this very day from the horse's mouth as it were, and you'll forgive me for NOT paraphrasing...

If someone has an opportunity to talk to EC about his BB again, can they ask whether he possibly remembered if the speakers were the "silver" ones (Silverdale alnicos) or the "green" ones (20watt ceramic greenbacks).

This has been discussed here long and hard over the years and while there is no hard cold fact about it it's generally accepted that given the time period(late '65 when EC got his specially made 1962 combo) in all probability it had the alnicos, pundits acknowledging a difference in tone between those and the ceramic G12M20s.
He used it prior to recording the Beano album and was also evident on Primal Solos, listen to the track 'It Hurts To Be In Love' recorded at The Flamingo Club in March '66.

I agree it was probably alnicos in Eric's amp. My 2-12 18watter has the alnicos which dated to Oct.65. My 66' BB had the original G12m ceramics. I dropped in a pair of G12's a while back and I think the tone is a little closer to the original recording... more chime, sweeter treble and quicker breakup. But generally, the two speakers sound pretty damn close in that amp. Funny enough though, when I hear the Flamingo Club recordings, Eric's amp sounds darker than the Beano LP to me, which is what my BB sounded like with the 20watt greenbacks.

Hey Blewsbreaker- I know what you mean about the Flamingo recordings. Just for interest- who knows for sure- have you read the section on it in the Hjort "Strange Brew" book (p.29)? He says the recordings were actually done on Nov 7 '65 (date was moved forward on later Decca LP liner notes to hide the fact that the recordings technically would have belonged to Immediate in '65, if they'd known), and quotes a fan Warren Coleman who was there and says Clapton didn't have his own amp yet, just back from Greece on this second gig with the new lineup, and had a borrowed amp for the gig!

If true, that would also suggest that whenever he got the Marshall combo was after the first week of nov '65.

Too bad we don't know what amp Eric used at that Flamingo gig.........was it a head/4x12?........who knows, but what a sound.

Hey goldtop- Would you agree that, whatever it was, I guess he turned it up!

If the above date is correct, the first time Clapton had ever played with Jack Bruce was the night before.

This is probably a stupid question, but is there any chance Eric's amp was an 18 watt? Since it's a 'one off' how can anyone be sure it was a 30 watt BB?

That's a good question, we had a big discussion/thread on that a few years ago but I think it may have been on another board. Banker, as I recall had posed the question in fact. There were some varied measurements made on the existing photos of the amp, using logos and other details of known size, and the conclusion was that the amp was definitely bigger than any known stock Marshall pinstripe 18W, FWIW.

That controlled overdriven tone he got on It Hurts is testament to that for sure.......what a sound and tone he got.
I've got Strange Brew right here Jeff and it's good to read all the news of the time.........and two days beforehand Peter left the fold.
