• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Now, this should throw a spanner in the works here...The only time George played this is when he bought it from Norm at Norm's apartment in 1973. He had bought two of them and kept the one he liked. I was at Whalin's Sound City when he came back from Norm's. He walked in the front door with two brown cases and went straight to the back of the store where the office was. My friend & bandmate Albert Williams worked at the store and had told me that George was coming. I lived about 5-10 minutes away on the ccorner of Yucca & Cahuenga (or as we called it..Yucca Flats). Anyway, I don't see why they say it was George's. It was the one he gave the guy who bought Lucy from Whalin's and tried to extort more money and gear out of George for Lucy's return.

Once in the hand... if a sales receipt was made, goes to provenance.

Then, marketing: it's got a name, Harrison's Ransom Burst.

Viola!

Sorry: Am I getting my lore confused, or I am blanking on details: if George bought 2, what became of the other one? You are not talking about the Fender P-bass I presume...
- Did he purchase 2 from Norm feeling Ochoa would be picky so he needed to present him with a choice?
- Was it something he gifted?
- And, per above: If he flipped the 2nd LP it would still get marketed as a Harrison-owned LP.

More from a HA presser with the ransom story, mentioning Cahuenga:

"Robert Truman, the co-owner of Nadine's Music in Hollywood. Nadine's, a shop for dedicated gearheads, was a favorite haunt of guitarists, especially in the 1980s and '90s.
Along with the ransom guitar, Truman is working with Heritage to offer a number of other extremely choice guitars in his esteemed collection.
Together, these instruments make up Truman's "Cahuenga Collection," so named after the boulevard in Los Angeles."

Here Comes the Sunburst: George Harrison's 'Ransom' 1958 Les Paul Headlines Heritage Auctions' September Guitar Auction Beatles guitarist bought this guitar so he could get back the legendary Lucy, which was a gift from Eric Clapton

Question, regarding the 30-day wait period and ethics: why didn't George (or authorities) go after Whalin for restitution, or to provide the instruments for ransom?

Seems the whole mess was because the cooling period was not adhered to. Yeah, OK, George could afford to eat a loss more easily, but I'd really lean on the root cause...

So George bought two bursts, kept the one he liked the most and used the other one to get Lucy back from Miguel Ochoa?

I'm really interested in what this other burst sounds like, the "Ransom Burst" sounds awfully good to my ears.

Sold for $312.5k (incl. buyer's premium). Not a bad price for a nice-looking, but comparatively un-flamey Burst. Maybe its provenance added a few $s (or maybe that's were the market is moving...).
