• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Nobody does a vintage Telefunken like PreSonus!

They wrote the BOOK on vintage Telefunken.

The rest are a joke!

Who do you think the bands call for Telefunken? Telefunken?

Now if you need a vintage Shure sound you might call PreSonus.

But I would call Telefunken 'cause the rest of the vintage Shure mics sound more like Telefunken than Telefunken!

Or something like that...

I'm glad my vitriolic opinion sparked real discussion of tweed amps for the new players who don't know. It now has some great food for thought. Find your flavor of tweed. And the bottom line is indeed "If it sounds good it is good".

That recording is two guitars direct into an amp and the 57 mics direct into an old Reel to Reel. Post your tone, I am hardly embarrassed by that legendary Sovereign/Oxblood combo!
Also what a day in age where one can snoop through the web of the internet to unravel people's lives. Thanks Obama.
Is THAT what you think happened? You did not contribute to the discussion in a positive way. And you still don't get it.

This thread has degraded since the original question about Tweed Deluxe amps, but since it drifted into other amps, I will state my views:

I've always been a Fender guy, and have a lot of vintage Fender amps (in fact, all of them, from the tweeds to brown face to blackface) that I love. I also have some vintage Gibson amps, most of which I also love (but not all). I also have a vintage Magnatone and Silvertone and they are great amps. But I also have a number of reissue Fenders, Marshalls, Dr Z.'s, B&G's only amp model, Tone King, modern Gibsons, Modern Vox amps, modern Ampegs, a Sampson era Matchless, a Naylor, and even one Victoria - and I think they are great amps. All are tube amps, and I have tinkered with tube swaps and sometimes speaker changes to get the best sound to my liking. I think my ears are pretty good at discerning tone, and many other players have used them as well and have commented. And I've had some amps that don't sound good to my ears and have sold them. Bottom line is that there are a lot of cool amps out there that do their "thing" well, and so enjoy what you like and what inspires you to play better. (y)

my logical skull thinks this ...

some make copies based off of the original circuit

some make copies based off of the original circuit w/o any regard to actual components used

some make copies based off of the original circuit with regard to actual components used

some make copies based off of the original circuit with regard to the components used and the actual values of said components from a vintage amp they perceived to sound superior to other vintage examples they have heard ...

and then, some make copies based off of the original circuit with regard to the components used and the actual values of said components from a vintage amp they perceived to sound superior to other vintage examples they have heard and then also impart what they feel are improvements

that's how I got to Lazy J

so, if you have suggestions, then suggest and i shall investigate

i'm 60, started playing in 2019 with two custom shop wildwood spec guitars, fell face first down that tone chasing rabbit hole, blew up my son's amp and now want a new amp before covid fries my fucking brain

Roland Micro Cube has to go

Fear not good Sir - my pat pending headgear is mod-able with an inner tin foil lining, guaranteed to stop brain frying of most description in it's tracks or a partial refund if it goes south (subject to available funds and of course the complainant being alive to chase claim the dough ) . I can start work on the thing almost intermediately next spring.

Who said this Forum was full of lazy bollocks....

You are headed in the right direction.

If you dare, continue here and we can nail down some specifics.

Pricing will be your master here.

Straight tweed types have MANY variations.

Some are much more adaptable than others, i.e. a Bassman is a wonderful clean beast down low volume (which was the POINT of most amplifiers back then, the wattage gave you cleans at much higher volumes).

Lay into that volume and you out-Marshall a Marshall (and get visits from the local constabulary).

But you can overdrive them and patch them and fuzz them and get good stuff down lower.

The Twin has the same output but is a bit different tone.

The Pro is close at a little more than half what the Bassman puts out.

The Deluxe WILL play clean if set up right but gets dirty much more quickly.

Any of these never had Reverb on them.

Many aftermarkets do add reverb.

I have both variations (and tremolo or vibrato on a few).

I find additional tanks (like the Reverbrato) to do that better anyway so you have decisions to make there.

Oh wait, so you're saying that some components like resistors and capacitors can "drift" over 65 years and the sound you're hearing from that 50s Tweed Deluxe may not be the way it sounded when it was new? And you're saying that not all Tweeds from the 50s sounded exactly the same when they left the factory? And you're saying that you can get a close enough approximation of what some Tweeds sound like, your Tweed for the sake of this point, with other amps that the vast majority of listeners wouldn't be able to consistently pick the $10,000 Tweed from the much cheaper contemporary amp? And you're saying that the sound we like is to our own taste and is vastly a subjective observation and that some people may actually prefer other amps to a Victoria and to claim ANY amp is the best of the best is a foolish statement? Good points.
But I'm just a 60-year-old gig dog with some cool equipment and clapped-out ears.
My opinions are worth every bit of what you paid for them.

wow. Excellent playing. great dynamics. Even cool phrasing with extra restraint to add to the tension/resolve. He obviously knows tone and that amp is getting a very clear/direct sound.

Thanks for introducing us to Vintage Trouble!

Interesting discussion about cheap off-the-shelf parts. There were some pics earlier in the thread where you could see coupling capacitors. I noticed the Fender amp had their custom "pure vintage" recreations (of different dielectrics such as wax), the Clark amp had Jupiter "red astron" caps; both expensive specialty parts, but there was one amp full of comparatively cheap and ordinary "orange drop" caps. Which one was that?

The story on those "cheap orange drops" is they are not.

They are custom made to custom specs.

I have several of those. They are very well made and sound very good. (Victoria)

I am not silly enough to think they are the only game in town.

But they definitely are excellent amps.

You couldn't pay me to play a Lazy J. Victoria is the only company that makes a tweed amp correctly.
Jeff Becks amp tech: "On the tour now, we’re using these marvelous Lazy J amps built by Jesse Hoff."
