I'm not a PAF expert so I can't be a lot of help. If you use the "search" function at the top of the page you will find more info. than you'll know what to do with.

Definitely use the Search function since that topic has been done EXTENSIVELY...you will be pleased with your results. They are wonderful pickups....the nuances? Listen to ABB at the Fillmore, Clapton's Bluesbreakers, etc...that is the only education about PAFs you will need in terms of tone. If you need to verify if they are original, pick up "Beauty of the Burst" and all the details are in there for identification purposes....BB

As far as identification of a PAF,Karaoke Karl posted this information that may help.

TEST #1: If you look at the large holes on the top of the bobbins near the end of the pick up. The hole on the slug side is square with a circle around it. The hold on the pole piece side is also a square but with a "Smaller" circle around it. The slug side ALWAYS has a larger circle. New pick ups (Duncan, Gibson) copy this somewhat but don't get it right.

TEST #2: Looking through a magnifying glass the circles and squares on NEW pick ups look machined "TOO" well. The vintage PAFs look funky.

TEST #3: Look inside the holes, you'll see copper wire with a purplish hue to it. If it looks too clean in there or the color of the wire is different then it might be forged or a rewind.

TEST #4: The tape around the bobbins is like paper type tape and shouldn't look like it's been taken off.

TEST #5: If you look at the side view of the pickups, you will usually see the bobbins 'warped' a bit and 'curving up' on the outsides.

TEST #6: The magnet has smooth machined edges, but rougher tops & Bottoms.

TEST #7: The PAF decal through a strong magnifying glass has raised gold lettering.

TEST #8: Around the edges of the black decal you'll see a little clear bit of the decal
but you definately need a strong maginfier for that

TEST #9: The slug side is usually the cream side. Although I have not seen it the other way around authenticated

TEST #10: Last but not least, nothing sounds like a PAF

Ed A posted some pickup sound files in this section that may help you hear the unique diff in orig PAF's vs other pickups.

Good luck on the purchase:dude

I thought it was "You buy them books, send them to school and they eat the teacher". That's how my old man used to say it.:dead:

In the post-Mary Kay LeTourneau (sp?) era, that statement takes on a whole new meaning!

Rolls,

If it is possible, first of all, try them and compare them with new PAF style HB's.
The only creteria is "your" taste.;)
