• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Can you guys that play real PAF's tell me where you usually set your tone controls? Do have them on 10 or do you dial them back for more honk and vowel tones?

Depends on the guitar. I have 6 guitars with PAF's. some stay dialed wide open, some down around 4, some around 7-8. It all depends on the guitar & the tone I am looking for. Typically, I like the rolled back honk, but that can be found at different numbers on the tone knob.

disclaimer - not having PAFs but some good PAF clones, so ignore if OP question is strictly PAF related

While every guitar with PAFs (clones) has it's own sweet spot, I tend to set my whole rig to have the tone I'm satisfied with - neck on 6-8 with 15nF and bridge on 4-6 with 22nF, both clean tones and dirty ones. Each will still have it's own thing going, but I want them all in the ballpark that is mine.

If I have to go out of these ranges, it's time for modding, electrics or hardware or both. And if modding fails, it's not a LP for me.
