Paul Kantner is a deeply powerful guitarist, and it's a shame that not many of my friends know about him.

He mostly played Rickenbacker, Guild, Carvin, a Fender Stratocaster and a Gibson ES 355 electric guitar in the Airplane. He may have also played a Telecaster, but I can't remember.

This picture from the Eighties shows Paul Kantner with a white Gibson Les Paul. Craig Chaquico can be seen playing one in the background.

I also know Craig Chaquico played a goldtop Gibson Les Paul, as seen on the back cover of Spitfire. He still owns it from time to time.

What I would like to know is if Paul Kantner's family members still own that White Les Paul. I think its a custom.

When did Paul Kantner acquire his Les Paul, what tracks did he use it on? I'd like to know.
David Freiberg also played a red Gibson SG Electric bass and a few Fender Precision Bass and Fender Jazz Bass guitars during his tenure in Jefferson Starship. But yeah, he was mostly a keyboard player, alternating with Pete Sears (who played bass, keyboards, ukulele and a Fender Telecaster for the Electric rhythm guitar on Girl With The Hungry Eyes from Freedom At Point Zero.)

I believe he also played Viola, Electric guitar, percussion and a Doug Irwin custom designed bass guitar. Doug Irwin also designed a few custom bass guitars for Pete Sears, most of which were recovered some 40 years after the infamous Germany concert that temporarily forced out Grace Slick. You might also remember that Doug Irwin created several custom designed electric guitars for Jerry Garcia Of The Grateful Dead.
As for amps, I guess David Freiberg played some Ampeg amps, as well as Marshall amps, a Fender Bassman Amp and some custom designed amps from Doug Irwin.

I think Pete Sears 1963 Fender Jazz Bass was either fretless or had flatwound strings. I can hear it pretty well on Tumblin. I own Red Octopus, Spitfire and Earth, as well as the 45 of Light The Sky On Fire from the Star Wars Holiday Special and greatest hits album Gold. I also own the live Jefferson Airplane album Bless Its Pointed Little Head.

That guitar is not white. It is a natural finish Limited Edition ”The Les Paul”. The binding is a big clue...it is rosewood binding. The knobs are rosewood. The pickguard is rosewood. The highly flamed maple is a clue.
Here is a color picture of one.....

There is a mother of Pearl block on the backside of the headstock with the limited edition number..lbelow the serial number.
I know a fellow who got one for his high school graduation in 1976. In the ‘80s his first wife had a Kahler vibrato bridge installed As a birthday present, The local hack butchered that top to make a hole for that bridge. They are beautiful guitars, imho.

Thanks. It looked white in the picture, so I thought it was white. Didn’t know it was a Natural LP!

I also believe Jorma Kaukonen played a Gibson Les Paul. I know he played a Gibson ES 345 as well along with a Gibson J200 acoustic guitar, all run through 4 Fender Twin Reverb amps and a Fender Bassman or Guild amp.
