Green Manalishi anyone?? The reptilian current custodians couldn't give a shit about the music or heritage, just the cash value and as JB suggests, once the celebrity premium has been well and truly flogged to dust with no takers, I think they'll dump it for a quick sale with the true level of reverence they hold for it- there could not have been grubbier hands for this fine old guitar to end up in IMO- Joe's withstanding of course!

If it was purchased from Gary or Gary's family unmolested, unexploited and without the curmudgeons selling 5 dollar dances with it at guitar shows and then trying to flip it for a quick mil all the while sucking what life and passion slowly out of the guitar over the course of a decade then yes.. It would bring more. Now Stripe is another story. :2zone

PS.. Sorry I'm a bit passionate about the subject. But we are talking Peter Green and Gary Moore here.

So, if I get this right, your opinion is, that the way the current owners/custodians treated the guitar has somewhat desecrated it?
You've played it, does it still have "it" or do you have the impression, it lost something?

Huh? The plastic while Gary owned it? What holes were drilled while Gary owned it?

Second strap button hole drilled into it, Gary changed out the original knobs and put those reflectors on, the bridge was changed I believe.

I don't think he looked at it as an investment. He was a player and he certainly played it. :2cool

I kind of disagree. I would like these iconic guitars to be passed to the next generation of greats. Violins and other instruments have had similar histories in days gone by.

I think it is great that Duane's gold top is lent to various guitar greats of this generation for example

I totally agree but in the real world it's not going to happen realistically. Unless some very kind soul buys it and loans it out to a talented young player. If Melvyn still owns it then maybe lending it to a museum for a while may get rid of some of the bad karma.

I loved seeing Derek Trucks on Duane's Goldtop. Nice stuff.

Most people anywhere who've heard of him think this. This might be similar to Les Paul, the guitar is better known than the man himself, well maybe not quite the same, but "Black Magic Woman" and the recognition that Peter received for it reminds me of that a bit.

Again I agree, I was just using America as an example to the original comment. Outside of our little world, even here in the UK, nobody knows him. It's why we need to keep the blues alive! :2zone

Unfortunately this guitar is the roadmap on how not to handle a celebrity guitar of iconic status. The ensuing skullduggery and continued cloak and dagger myths, (is it for sale, is it not... ?? Who owns it? it is for sale by the way: asking 300,000 quid aka 500,000 USD yet I digress) half truths surrounding the guitar literally renders it dead in the water as far as a sellable instrument in my humble opinion.. The only way I believe this guitar gets right is if is loaned, given or sold (cheaply) to an up and coming young guitarist who's willing to love it forever and make new history with it. JD Simo comes to mind... Just saying. 500,000 is about 400,000 north of what I think it's worth at this point in its life until a new era is started.

Agreed. For those not familiar with the UK vintage guitar market it can have it's dark side. I'm not saying Denmark St in particular is like the Cantina Bar in Star Wars but there are some parallels. Greeny is tainted. No question. $2M, $1M, $500K. Prices are falling. Reality is starting to hit home.

Gary Moore "Midnight Blues" live in Paris is required listening/viewing to actually see and hear what's possible in the right hands.

It is a great playing guitar and I am grateful to have played it at the Albert Hall last year.

Joe B :salude

Midnight Blues live in Paris sends shivers down the spine. As does, for me, Before The Beginning by Peter from the Mac show at The Roundhouse, April 1970 (his last official show I believe with the band before leaving).

Before The Beginning, now that would be a cool song to cover Joe! :dude:

I'm glad you got the chance put Greeny to good use last year.

Go John! :applaude

Truth is I'm a bit financially "embarrassed" at the moment, a recent vintage Fcar acquisition has emptied the "fun" pot, so I'd have to trade into it. Plus the mere thought of putting money in the H'sons hands gives me a pulmonary.

Good point, like most people think Steve Miller did the original version of "Jet Airliner".

I wonder if the kids today think Barbara Streisand covered JBLPPlayer's "Prisoner" ?

On a serious note though, covers can lead casual listeners back to the roots and the originals which is a blessing.

With regards to Black Magic Woman, and with all due respect to Santana, if you listen to Peter's playing with Santana at the 1998 RNRHOF induction, Peter's touch and sensitivity runs rings around Carlos.

I believe the first notable "public" appearance of Greenie was April 2006 (Dallas Guitar Show). It was dissembled and photographed by some of the folks here.

Clearly, any issues of "molestation" occurred BEFORE this date. The photographs bear this out.

Buy it from Melvyn and cut all of them out!

So if Melvyn still owns it I have to ask: What the hell was he thinking sending Greenie to PH?

What was wrong showing Greeny at guitar shows?

Ask Udo Pipper.:laugh2:

I think that Gary wanted a private sale.

GARY MOORE'S RESPONSE.....

.One of the conditions of me selling this guitar was that it was not to go to a guitar dealer.

'It was also supposed to be a very discreet sale, because this is exactly where I didn't want to end up;here where I am with you today. There's lots of trauma [caused by] letting the thing go in the first place.I was told it was going to a guitar collection and that this guy Phil-I didn't know his name at this point-was only the intermediary and not the recipient. If I had been told [Winfield was the buyer] I would have called the whole thing off.' Moore was astonished to see the guitar on the Maverick website.

'The next thing it's down the Dallas Guitar Show, here, there, and everywhere, being paraded around like the bearded lady.'

The next point Moore want's to contest is the notion that he was paid close to a million dollars.Although he wishes the amount to remain secret,he confirms that the figure was substantially less than that quoted by Phil Winfield. 'He's using that to bump up the price. He's going to say that he bought it from me for a million dollars so that it's worth two million.I could show you the bill of sale, but for my own personal reasons I didn't want that to come out.'

BTW, found this on Mav's site, never seen it before. Is this for Greenie or Stripe
