I have a 1961 ES 330 td in cherry finish that has position markers on both sides of the neck. There are no holes from a lefty pick guard installation or strap button. The guitar blacklights perfect and the size of the binding and the dots are the same. I also compared the binding size with my 1962 ES 335 and those too are the same. Could this be a factory mistake? It would be great to know if anyone has seen this before. Thanks

My '59 es-355 mono had markers on both sides.

Possibly someone intended the neck for a lefty, then someone else put in on a righty. Stuff like that happens.

Not an answer, but another oddity - when I had the binding off the neck of the 1960 335 there were clear fret slot saw marks on the underneath (visible from the side). I suspect that someone made a fret slot boo-boo and they just flipped it and got it right!

Agree with what's gone before. Here's a pic of the 1970 SG Standard that I had. Has righty position markers, so they were still obviously pulling righty necks and adding lefty position markers into the '70s decade. Doesn't surprise me at all that a neck earmarked for a lefty (such as on your 330) has ended up on a righty.

Could be worst, my wife has 2 lefty Guilds with righty side markers, but no lefty ones.

Here's one worse than that:

I had an early fretless Precision with the side dots where they should be on a fretted bass! :wah

Thanks for all the info guys. It starting out as a lefty neck makes sense.

Yep, even the current Historic leftys have side dots on both sides of the neck.

One the Vs the right handed and left handed bodies/necks are identical. The only differences between the two are the routes under the pickguard and the slant of the bridge.

The original lefty Bursts had them on both sides:

Tom, is that the '60 that Neilson sold to McCartney? That dark spot near the shoulder by the toggle looks very familiar. It had the '2' over the serial number, making it a facory 2nd. It was either Ed Seelig or Pete Alenov, can't remember which, but one of them offered this guitar to me in 1980. He wanted 8K and I got really indignant and thought he was gouging me with rock star prices so I passed! Next thing I know Neilson buys it and sells it to Macca! D'oh!

The second photo with the right handed one is the one you remember [that's Ed's photo]. Here is one of my favorite pics from those days. I bought the faded one. :ganz
