• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Before I apply Fret Doctor i use some Formsbys and clean the board very well. Then in a couple of hours I use the Fret Doctor. Same as what was mentioned. Rub in a few drops with my finger, wait a little bit and buff off. My board is dark so i dont need to over do it.

The Beafifer (Fret Dr) site has a few words on darkening a fretboard.

"Darkening" Your Board

A very frequent comment I hear is that "Fret Doctor darkens my board nicely!" Over time, with exposure to air, light, humidity, and wear and tear, the board faded. The Fret Doctor simply restored it to the original color. The main reason for oiling a fretboard isn't to darken it; it is to preserve it. Remember that the verb, "darken," has created endless confusion on some of the guitar forums, and some quite nasty arguments, for quite a while. Fret Doctor will bring up the natural color, grain, and patina of a tropical hardwood, making it darker in appearance but not making it black. Ebony will appear blacker because black is the normal color of the wood. Your Rosewood will be far prettier.

I've always heard not to leave it on too long also, as it seeps down into the fret slots. I use Guitar Honey and I do frets 1-12, then immediately wipe it off in the order I applied it, then do the same to the upper frets in the same order. I also think once a year is excessive. I only do it once when I acquire a new guitar, then maybe once every 3-5 years thereafter

no, as long as its done sparingly. unless you live in extreme conditions, a little on your fingertip rubbed into the board, then wiped with a paper towel (you'll notice the paper towel will be dirty, as it removes excess oil AND any surface dirt/grime)
every 2nd or 3rd string change. Even when playing a lot, my strings seem to last , so I'm Fret Doctoring only 3-4 times per year. Monthly could saturate/ruin your board.
