I played a R9 for the first time yesterday and of cource it had to have the neck I have been looking for all my life! Just the right shape for my hand and made it very smooth to play. So my question is.... is the neck shape on a 50's 2002 standard have that neck or perhaps the 60's? I really need a guitar with that neck but I can't really afford a real R9 yet. Thanks in advance for your input!

I agree with grinchmob, the R9's I've picked up seem very similar to the 50's neck 02 std. The R8's seem to be a bit chunkier to my hands.

I just got back from Dave`s guitar shop and Jeff let me see the actual difference in the reissuesand the real ORIGINAL bursts. I got to hold 3 !!!!!!!!!!! original bursts from Dave`s personal collection! ( DROOL!!!!!!! ) well acually one wasn`t a burst but a 57 gold top. Man that thing was LIGHT!!!!!!!!! All of the necks were closer to the USA standard models than the reisue was . The RIs were alot thicker. Jeff told me that the USA standards were alot closer in the necks than the custom shop ones. The RI I held was WAY too big for my taste but the original burst and the 50s neck on the USA standards are very very close IMO.

I would agree. I played a 03/58 and I don't know what they were patterning the necks after, but it sure wasn't a Burst. The neck was gargantuan.

This is an interesting topic. Last summer I bought an ES-137 Custom, which was claimed to have a "59-rounded profile neck" this is the same neck that comes on the R9s. A very meaty handful of neck indeed. I really liked it. When I bought my 02 Standard, it was claimed to have a "fat 50s style" neck profile. I assumed it would be close to the 59 neck. In reality it is much closer to the 60s neck IMHO. THE DIFFERENCE IN NECK SIZE BETWEEN MY 02 STANDARD AND MY NEW fADED lpdc SEEMS TO BE MINIMAL(oops!:lolspin I'm not re-typing that). So I wonder what they are basing that "Rounded 59 neck on if it is not in fact an actual 59. I have heard that the r6s have a huge neck as well, which I am happy to hear, because that may very well be my next purchase. Did the original 56 GT have a giant neck as well or is this big fat neck just something they made up?
