Refinishing Korina?

I am looking at refinishing a Korina explorer in nitro, and want to get close to the original formulation. Any pointers on mixing up the tinted amber color for the clear coat? What pore filler would you recommend?
Thanks,
Rick

I don't know about original formula Nitro, but there's a couple of threads about finishing in Korina on the ReRanch Forum. Bill Lester at ReRanch sells tinted Amber Nitrocellulose in an aerosol can. I've used it on Korina before with good results. There's info on pore filling too, I mixed a bit of Dark Mahoghany in with Bartlett Filler, and wiped it on with a cloth then thinned it out with some mineral spirits.

I would recommend McFadden's mahogany grain filler, thinned slightly with mineral spirits.

Before using the grain filler, though, spray a washcoat of clear nitro over the entire body. This will prevent the stain in the filler from coloring the field of the wood. Sometimes, you want the grain filler to color the wood (as I did on the SG I recently redid), but, in this case, you don't; you only want the dark filler in the pores. Spraying a washcoat of lacquer also makes removal of the excess filler much easier than if you don't use it.

When the filler has thickened to about the consistency of peanut butter, remove the excess with a scraper. After it has dried, wipe the body down with a burlap rag to remove most excess, and then a rag slightly dampened with mineral spirits to remove the remaining filler. I then sand with 200 grit.

After sanding, spray your sealer coats and then very light coats of the ReRanch amber -- it's very easy with that particular color to get the color too strong. Follow that with clear top coats.

I also have some water based amber colorant that I have mixed with clear to get a very subtle amber hue in the past. I could see where the spray can amber could get too dark. I know nitro has a tendency to darken up a bit as it cures and the finish flashes off.
Thanks for the advice,
Rick

Sometimes the owner, Bill Lester, shuts down the operation to go on outings.
He belongs to some sort of Chili cookoff club. When he does this, he disables the ordering capability on the website.

I've ordered from them online about 6 times, and they're fast to ship.
