• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

RIP Danny Kirwan

Don't know if this was posted here before or if this is the right forum for this sad news.
Danny yesterday died at 68. The info was brought by Mick Fleetwood on the bands website.
Saw the original Mac a few times in the late 60ies. Great band that was.
RIP Danny

Saw this earlier on FB. Oddly enough, I went to a vinyl record riot last Saturday and searched out Pete Green's Fleetwood Mac stuff. I was just able to listen to side 1 of "Then Play On" yesterday.

I cannot overstate his influence on me. What a great player and writer.

Much enjoyed his playing when he was more 'well' and a great talent.

He was a troubled soul though and yet another casualty of that era, sadly.

I hope he finds the peace that alluded him in this realm.

Godspeed. :salude

Count me in as being heavily influenced by Danny. I only saw him once with Fleetwood Mac, ironically at the last show that Jeremy Spencer did with the band before his disappearing. It was at the Fillmore West. Mostly I remembered them as doing their Viva Las Vegas shtick. Also on the bill was Chicken Shack, with a Christine Perfect on keyboards.

Yeah, I read this a little while ago. Terrible news.

I was lucky enough to see two early versions of Fleetwood Mac that included Danny. I saw them first when Then Play On came out; Green was still with them. That was the best performance I've ever seen from rock band. Everyone in the band contributed to an outstanding performance. Green and Kirwin together were a force of nature! Then I saw them again within 6 months and Christine Perfect was in...and Green was gone. But this too was a fantastic show. Christine was excellent and Kirwin really stood out. I remember Station Man and Jewel Eyed Judy sending shivers down my back. Such incredible feel, phrasing, tone and soulful playing. He's been sorely missed for many, many years but now he's truly gone. Very sad.

Did Christine perform with FM? :hmm

No, Tom, don't recall that she did. My memory may be a bit fuzzy, but Chicken Shack played in an adjacent room to the main stage. I remember Stan being quite entertaining and that they had a "chick" keyboard player. I wasn't privy to Chicken Shack before then. FM I had followed for quite a while, so was quite surprised by their 50's music part of the show.

I just perused through an awesome musicologists site called Chrome Oxide to confirm my dates, and it wasn't clear as they quit keeping track of FM's gigs after Peter left. I did look up when Jeremy left and it was February of 1971. I attended a few shows there during college and could very well have mixed a couple of them up. Good days, though!

One of my favourite Danny Kirwan / early Fleetwood Mac tracks was 'Crazy For My Baby' a.k.a. 'Without You' from the 'Then Play On' / 'English Rose' recordings. On the album version, the recording featured soulful solo lead guitar work.

There is though a couple of 'raw' recordings of this song from very early on with Peter Green and Danny Kirwan together. One a 'home recording' and the other from a (slightly later) BBC session 'Top Gear' with some FM band members. So, below is the link to an article which, (when you scroll down) has two sound clips with Peter Green playing some haunting harmonica to accompany Danny Kirwan's vocals and guitar.

I am blown away by the "Boston Blues" live CD recorded at the Boston Tea Party. I believe it was done in '70, and many say it was done at their absolute peak. Seamless guitar work.
