• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Haven't had her out in a while. I had her recapped and changed the power tubes recently. WOW - she ROCKED! Jamming a LP Jr into her - Bright channel volume on 7. EQ to my taste. Boosted for leads with an awesome OD pedal (one of those from TPG!!). WOW.

My bread and butter amps are Fender Bassman heads and old Marshalls but, I"m WAY into the boutique thing too. It feels good to come back home! Those old Marshalls really rock!

cool ..what power tubes did you use ? ..I've got a '74 50 watt head with some old groove tubes that were in it when I bought it ..they sound ok, but I'm sure a new pair would liven things up

My '71 large box 1987 (5937C) is one of my favorite Marshalls also. Very aggressive and perfect with a LP for that early 70's rock thing. I have mine loaded with XF2's and Mullard 12AX7's except for a AT7 in the PI position. Although I normally use my JTM45 to keep my hearing intact, every so often I fire up the '71 through a 1960AX with Greenbacks, just for some Page ripoffs.

These recent threads with folks firing up their old Marshalls must be a sign for me to do one. I have to time it right with the neighbors, tho....

When I first got it, it had NOS Tesla EL34s. When they went, I put a set of RFT/Seimens in it. This time I went new production. Mullard "RI" - which are New Sensor tubes. My first time with these. I'm very happy with their tone. Usually for new production, I prefer Winged C or Electro Harmonix.

Clips - yeah, I gotta get back to doing those one of these days. I've got a nice digital 8 track that haven't used in a while.

Rocking it again tonight - same rig. Jr, Spaceman Aphelion Overdrive (one of those "snobby" overdrives - AMAZING), Marshall 50w (1987), and my Marshall 1960BX cab from 2000. That cab is broken in! Sounds fantastic! Started playing with a Herco pick recently - super cool!

I was left a 64' Jr. and 64' Blackface Champ from a familly member. Did a filter cap job and NOS tubes plus new Weber speaker......That Champ Rocks!!!! puts out alot more watts than it should. But you've given me the path to Rock. I will be firing up the 71' 50 watt metal panel Marshall to see how the 64' really sounds. Thanks for the Post. I believe old amps should have what came in them when new. For me metal panel Marshall's get Mullard Xf2 double getters or singles at least and Mullard preamps! Bias to taste. EL 34's do not need all the bias a 6l6 does and will be easier on the tubes. Not cheap. But if you look for the Blackburn codes that is what matters, not the lables. Mullard's make a Marshall sound like a Marshall should "The Sound of Rock!" I am starting to get a little collection of Jr's going here a 55', 60' & 64' Taste test in order!:peace2
