Rolling Stones, ludicrous brown stuff

Hi guys, just saw a report from Britain's GB News that the Stones won't play Brown Sugar on stage anymore because it alludes to slavery in the lyrics.
Looks as though the lefty 'woke' brigade have gotten to the boys and they've literally rolled over.
I thought they had more balls than that.

Several mixed subjects in that song, just like lots of Stones and Beatles stuff back then. According to Richards, he got badly hooked on brown Mexican smack, " Brown sugar, why do you taste so good." Then there is the line about the horrors of the slave trade, "Gold Coast slave ship bound for cotton fields, sold in a market down in New Orleans, scarred old slaver know he's doing alright, here him with the women just around midnight." Then there is the line "I bet your momma was a tent-show queen, and all her boyfriends were sweet 16." Gritty stuff. Great lyrics IMHO. That song is in my top 10 of all time. The Stones are on record for saying they don't understand all the commotion about the song. I agree. The world has gone mad.

The blend of Keith's open G rhythm and Mick Taylor's lead at the beginning of the chorus is very cool. I've yet to play with another guitarist that can get it right.

Is this post musical, or political?

I don't play it either... been too woke for many years.

This happened a bit back... but yes it's a ridiculous situation.

What next, they won't reissue it on a release? They won't allow it to stream? How about re-recording it with 'updated' lyrics.

... Hey everybody, let's go burn some books! [Must I label this statement as satire?]

We have been in Total ClownWorld ... where a song is characterization that can be seen as commentary, and isn't explicitly advocacy, is suppressed.

Oh, let's stop playing 'Money For Nothing' ... because misogeny.

Words don't hurt, even words mistaken and 'mis-taken' out of context.

Get a grip on your self and your mind and respond, don't react. Understand it's in your perception and how you chose to interpret. It is not your responsibility to police other's minds or speech.

It's a blemish on their legacy and reveals the true state of Rock N' Roll rebellion: co-opted by the suits. Shame on them for a total cave. Ah, well... The cash must flow!

Not matter what you think about Van Morrison's and Eric Clapton's positions, at least they took them and spoke out. Yes, and Neil Young quietly crept back on Spotify. A man of principle! :ROFLMAO:

'Animal Farm' and 'Brave New World' were meant as cautionary tales, not playbooks.

Shh, don't you know you are NOT allowed to refer to Ol' Blighty as 'Great Britain' anymore... because... connotations and such? So offensive!

Best regards from 'MURICA

They've had to compromise before (Ed Sullivan show). There is music, and then there is the music biz. Not that they need the money, but it seems they still want to play.

Dylan was the master of mixed messages.

I understand the point... but a one-off to get your foot in the door in the process of becoming something meaningful, then subsequently kicking down doors, changing the dialog, is different from joining the cage builders.

Dylan's Christmas album is great.

You do have a good point there.

First off, I love the Rolling Stones and I love the song Brown Sugar.

I can also say that before the episode of The Wire where Prezbaluski recites the words I never even knew what they were.

That being said, the fact that the song is beloved and was probably danced to by a billion people for decades still makes it a win for The Stones.

Honestly, I wish some new band had written this song because the whole planet would explode.

That being said, if The Stones want to play it they will. They're probably the one band left that doesn't seem to care much about nonsense like this. I can see that the song may be offensive to people who may like Lil' Duckie or Tizzy D, but people that go see The Stones probably enjoy their music.

A song called Sympathy for the Devil wouldn't get noticed. However, Jesus is Just All Right With Me surely would.

The best "outrage" I've heard about is Walk On the Wild Side has been banned from a lot of radio stations because it's anti-trans. I'm a huge Lou Reed fan and he was a lot of things but anti-trans wasn't one of them. I mean, the guy was in a relationship with a transgender person for decades.

I'm surprised Under My Thumb hasn't been targeted by the wackos. OTOH it's pretty mild compared to the average rap song most 12-22 year old girls sing along to.
