• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

I've heard that Lifeson played a 345 in the early days, but when I hear this song it sounds like a burst. Does anyone know for sure? Anyone know which amp he was using? Sounds like a plexi to me. that tone is killing me!

Not sure about the amp, but I know for the studio he was using a white Gibson 335.

That tone is soooo comically easy to get with a healthy old marshall. If anything the speakers will probably do more to nail OR derail the tone. Right head, right cab, a good gibson....done.:)spin

Thanks everyone! Rich, do you think they are pre-rola's or an early 70's cab?

I really don't know, but I DO know my pre rolas seem to put the icing on the cake for that tone. The early 70's greenbacks work good too it seems, but there is a certain "something" that the pre rolas add. I used the rolas for years with no problems, but I noticed a little extra something after I started using the pre rolas. I guess the main thing is not to use vintage 30's or G12-75T's. :)spin

Thanks man! I have been trying to talk myself out of a half stack for soo long, but I just don't think I can live without one any more! I like the 60's blues tones, but that rock tone is what really kills me.

Now if I can just find the speakers. Why can't they make them like they used to...

Working Man was his original 69 335 that he had since high school (not white, that was the 355 he got around Farewell). Ran it thru a rental 50watt non master Marshall thru 4x12 (probably Greenbacks). The Marshall 50 watt I have with the Rich mod NAILS this sound.

F**k it should, I never had a problem nailing that tone for the last 20 years (yum). I DO have to use my stock heads though, the Atom Smashers make it sound like Slayer was playing it.:lol2 :lolspin

335...

That particular guitar featured a dark sunburst finish, IIRC; small block inlays on the fretboard, and a trapeze tailpiece.

The White ES-355 did not come until Moving Pictures- wait, actually I think it was featured on Permanent Waves, too.

On another thread, someone asked about Alex' 1st ES1275..the cherry one. It got destroyed on tour ( A Farewell To Kings) when a radial horn fell on it; if I recall correctly, according to Alex: "shearing off bridges and gouging chunks out of it".

Thus, the white ES-1275 was purchased to replace it.

I think I read recently he donated the White one to the R&R Hall Of Fame.

Heard their last album? No Keyboards. Sounds like vintage Rush. I love it. Lots of layered guitar sounds but very few solo's.

You aint kidding, that mod gets the single note line fatness like no other in a stock head. It really burns on the recording-da da da DAH DAH--HMMMMM....I gotta go pop that in the cd player:!
