• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

hehe...Got my Historic Makeovers back and it has that *thing*. A combination of the faded dyes that get that greening effect, a top carve, inlys, etc. Enjoy, but know that she's better in person and there's no way with my limited pitcher-takin' skilz that I can convey all the coolness of the top: lemon, grey-green, amber, etc. Kim's passion for the details of vintage Les Pauls is palpable and contagious (even though I've been smitten for 30 years and hardly need more enabling :rofl ). Somehow they managed to duplicate the vibe of some of my favorite real Bursts. Is it wrong to drool over your own guitar?
First three are from Kim:

The next are mine with my vintage Lifton case:

Wowser, that's a beauty. Really interesting top and I love the colour. Nice board as well, I know everyone goes on about dark boards but I like a bit of colour variation in mine. Did you go for the neck reset? I'm still to be convinced that this is an essential modification, but I suppose you'll never know how good your neck joint is unless you remove the neck.

Oh, and drool away - just wipe with a soft cloth when you're done! :punk

Something magical about those makeovers that has a certain mojo......

Enjoy it, looks good......

You said it. I just wish Gibson would have a major overhaul when it comes to allocating resources and completely re-invent the Custom Shop to do what a Custom Shop should be doing. I'm thinking guitars to CC standards for instance, with relicing as an option but done properly to include all the hardware, and good quality plastics and correct binding on all models. They could do a standard range of the popular LP, SG, and ES models but ideally the Custom Shop guitars should be custom ordered and specced accordingly. Just my pipe dream.

Seems I might have (key- might have) heard from a little bird that in the
future, after CC#3 (aka Donna) that a certain person from Florida just
might do Relic Aging on the Kossoff run......Hmmmmmm........
Would be nice for a Real Deal CC#4 the right way.......Hmmmmm.......LOL

If not, then make a VOS version and my little friend can do it up......

Anyone at Gibson listening? Hmmmmm.......

Thanks! No, it has the original neck set and board. Its an 06 CR0. I thought hard about getting the full Package A because folks whose opinion I trust say that those mods make a difference. Basically I didn't for monetary reasons.

Interstingly, the very first thing I noticed when I plugged it in is how loud it is now. I don't know if that has more to do with getting rid of the old Gibson finish or the new True Taper pots or both. And, before, it weighed basically the same (just holding them up together -not actually using a scale) as my Conversion but now is a little lighter after the makeover.

I'm looking forward to the lacquer dulling out and seeing how funky she'll get over the years!

For those who ponder about doing the neck re-set... To my ears it's the most noticeable change in how your guitar sounds. Kim has done 2 of mine so far and I just sent him my SG /LP about a month ago to do. It already has the Braz fingerboard and correct Trussrod that Dave did in `07. Kim is going to reglue the neck and refinish it. Should be even more killer after this!

I'm happy to defer to your experience in this matter, and common sense dictates that such an important joint on a Les Paul should be as snug and tight fitting as possible. But, I can't help thinking about a couple of great sounding (to me) Strats I've played that have had cardboard shims, micro tilt neck adjustment systems, loose bolts and god knows what else going on in the neck pocket area.

However, I'll admit I don't have the most discerning ear when it comes to guitar tone. But from memory, the price for the HM neck reset isn't cheap so I suppose you'd need to be convinced of the benefits before going down this road. I can tell you're definitely convinced so good luck to you, it's your money and your guitars so go for it. Finally, I only know Kim by reputation but if both he and Florian Jaeger consider this a worthwhile exercise then who am I to argue? It wouldn't appear that they need to create the extra work for themselves.
