• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Should I buy another custom?

I already have 2007 custom lp that i got for good price but it has few broken fret nibs and the second pickups has too much feedback....so I dont play it...
I bought it as investment to sell later or even repair the pickup and fret nibs

but I found a 2012 LP custom black apparently in perfect condition like new and it is about 3200 eur....
so I am thinking of buying it instead dishing out for new one at 4500 eur....

black beauty is my dream guitar anyways.....so I think as investment it is better to buy used guitar anyways and save with costs....around 1300 eur...

having 2 customs, isnt that too much?

I have four Les Pauls, four SGs, so you know my answer. 2012s don't have ebony fretboards if that matters to you.

Cracked fret nibs aren't a bad thing.

it sure would matter to me !

IMHO Richlight boards are extremely less desirable than real ebony - to me personally - they suck

sometimes I can not believe the questions on this forum - are folks actually asking for advice or are they just looking for confirmation that they did not just screw up in their purchase ?

other folks don't even have the first clue what a real 57 black beauty is !

" I already have 2007 custom lp that i got for good price but it has few broken fret nibs and the second pickups has too much feedback....so I dont play it... " - then fix the silly nubs and replace the pickup - that way you can play it

Of course you should buy it . If you always wanted a Black Beauty then it's a must addition to the family . I know as this was my very first electric as a kid way back and I still have mine and still play her . Go for it !

I almost bought Gibson classic.....Gibson is such a shady company....you really have to research so much before you buy....
classic vs regular is like a Porsche and Volkswagen.....come on...all these fucking different models....you can easily get scammed for buying crap like custom classic instead of the real black beauty.....

You can never have too many Les Pauls, or other Gibsons. Just ask Slash, or Joe Bonamassa. :)

a real 57 reissue Black Beauty must have :

1) proper Gibson Custom shop paperwork

2) all Mahagany body - not a maple cap

3) real EBONY wood board - not rosewood or Richlite

4 ) Knuson tuners - not Grovers

5) vintage correct short serial number - not some CS xxxxxx number

and don't buy a heavy boat anchor over 10 lbs either - big negative if you ever want to sell it

make sure you know what you are buying before you lay down money - there are various models that are close to this but are not the real kick ass "TRUE 1957 BLACK BEAUTY CUSTOM SHOP GIBSON REISSUE " !

The Jimmy Page Custom Black Beauty is the only one to get.

If it matters to you, they were using Richlite fretboards around that time as @stumphead noted. The one you're looking at may or may not have one so check it out.

Depends on the serial number. 2012 was the transition year and the first couple hundred CS Customs still used ebony. Gibson says the last Custom with ebony (until recently) has serial #CS200599, so there are a handful of 2012 Customs with ebony. Remember CS serial numbers are sequential so that doesn't mean there are 599 Customs with ebony. It means any Custom that was one of the first 599 guitars made in 2012 will have an ebony board. So if the serial number is less than or equal to 200599, it has an ebony board.

The first two have ebony, the rest have Richlite. They're all fantastic:

What does one consider a "Custom"? Because for me it has to have a mahogany top and neck with ebony board. I tend to agree with the above statement

I've never seen that anywhere about the first 599 and assume you got that directly from Gibson? Makes sense, they would be left over 2011s finished in 2012, but they were raided in August 2011 and I thought they stopped making Customs before 2011 was over.

I would consider USA Customs as “Customs”, and those mostly have maple tops and ebony boards.

Why not? I have two and I love 'em both!

On the fretboard material, both have ebony, which happens to be my favorite board.
